  1. Thomas A. Becket By Michele Rodriguez Period 3

  2. Early Life • Born circa 1118 • His father was believed to be a textile merchant and later made a living selling property. • Thomas moved to Paris and worked for Theobald of Bec, then Archbishop of Canterbury. • Theobald named him Archdeacon of Canterbury. • Appointed as Lord Chancellor under King Henry, the second.

  3. Archbishop of Canterbury • He was nominated and elected in 1162 to succeed Theobald. • Conflict arose between him and Henry, as Thomas wanted to extend the powers of Archbishop.

  4. Becket v. King Henry • Henry had hoped Thomas would help in restoring England to that of his grandfather. • Thomas felt that men of the clergy could only be judge and punished by God and not through secular powers. • Henry believed laws should be held and customs should be kept regardless of a man’s affiliation. • Thomas was sent into exile after refusing to comply with Henry’s orders. • Eventually, Thomas found a sanctuary provided by the king of France. • Henry was able to restore his power as he originally intended.

  5. Becket’s Death • Four knights mistook a comment made by King Henry as a command to kill Thomas. • They attempted to take him away to Winchester, but, after much protest, they killed him. • He was killed on December 29, 1170.
