  1. Workshop on appraisal of disassembled magnetsLesson learntMarch 17th, 2005 Inventory of cases F. Savary

  2. Inventory of cases • Quench failure • To date, 8 magnets have been dismounted (plus the case of 1005 with the cold weld): • 1026, 1126 and 1143 • 2013, 2023 and 2069 • 3136 and 3224 • There are other cases which are still pending (these magnets are still at CERN ready to be sent back to the CMA or already there waiting for repair or action) • 2024 (similar to 2025), 2098, 3208, 3220 (a 3rd run has been requested) • Special cases • 2025, which has been retested “as is” with two additional runs • 3219 and 3278, which have been submit to a third run • There is also a firm 1 case, which has seen a third run incidentally Inventory of cases - FS

  3. Inventory of cases, cont’d • Electrical failure: quench heater to ground and/or quench heater to coil, quench heater interruption • To date, 3 magnets have been dismounted (plus the cases of 2002 and 3003) • 2049 • 3143 and 3234 • Other cases are still pending (these magnets are still at CERN ready to be sent back to the CMA premises or already there waiting for repair) • 2124, 2143, 3153, 3297 (still on the test bench) • Electrical failure: inter-turn shorts • To date, one magnet has been dismounted (plus the case of 3004): • 2032 Inventory of cases - FS

  4. Inventory of cases, cont’d • Electrical failure: wiring to ground at the level of the IFS box • 1019 Inventory of cases - FS

  5. Inventory of casesThose intercepted at earlier stages • There are other interesting cases of inter-turn shorts intercepted at the factory during the production, at the collared coils stage. These have been detected by electrical insulation tests on the c.c. under pressure in the collaring-press. Then, the localization of the defect has been possible thanks to ad’hoc analysis of the warm magnetic measurements • To date, 13 cases have been observed • 1103, 1105, 1111, 1124, 1127, 1141, 1146, 1154, 1165, 1178 (all having short on the connection side) and 1217 (having short on the non connection side) • 2087 and 2101 (both having short on the connection side) • There is also a series of q.h. failures intercepted at the factory thanks to HV tests and/or resistance measurements Inventory of cases - FS
