At Pudong Airport • Delta DL 19 will arrive at Pudong airport at 1:45pm, May 9. • United Airlines UA 835 will arrive at Pudong airport at 1:55pm, May 9. • Please go through the Customs quickly, do not get out of the hall, and wait for the other members in the hall. Local guide will meet us in the hall. You can change $ to RMB there. • If DL 19 is delayed, then you need to take taxi to East China Normal University.

  4. Money Issues You may need to pay ($50-100) 1. Extra tips (room service + luggage) 2. Bottled water on road ($0.5/bottle) 3. Calling cards (SIM cards) 4. Meals if you do not like the ones provided 5. Admission fees to places not organized 6. Fee for overweight of your luggage 7. Taxi fare

  5. How much? At least $100 Recommend $250 • Bring more cash if you like to shop in China • Small stores do not accept credit card • Bring a credit card in case you need extra cash. To withdraw cash through ATM, you need to pay service fees

  6. Should I get RMB here? • Do not get RMB from local banks here • They charge too much and the rate is not good. • You can do it in Shanghai Pudong airport and/or banks in China, or at Best Western Hotel Beijing (Minimum $100)

  7. How to Pack • From Shanghai to Changsha to Beijing, you can only have a check-in and a personal carry-on luggage.   8. What is in personal carry-on luggage? • MELATONIN • A heavy cloth (it is cold in the airplane) • Tooth brush and tooth paste • Things you need for the first day if your luggage is delayed

  9. Climate in Shanghai • Weather in May is cooling and the range is from 18.6C to 23.5C (65.5F --- 74.3F) • Get ready to hand wash your clothes

  10. Electricity • Electricity is supplied at 220 volts, 50 cycles • Check your chargers for Cellular phone and laptop PC • You can get a converter in China

  15. Arriving at the airport at least two hours ahead of the departure time • Eight of us will meet at the airport at 5:55am, May 8. If you are late, we will not wait for you. • Make sure you have your passport, airline ticket, money, and address of ECNU with you on the way to the airport.

Important Notice— Summer 2008 Registration Expanded • Summer 2008 Priority Registration will re-open May 7-12.  The following student groups will have an opportunity to register for both May and Summer sessions. • Students currently enrolled or enrolled five semesters back and in good academic standing • Previously registered students • New, readmitted, and returning students • Currently enrolled students who move from academic probation to good standing as a result of spring grade processing will have an opportunity to register beginning May 9.

  19. Yuan and other renminbi units Renminbi (RMB) 人民币 (Chinese) The base unit of the renminbi is the yuan. This character has two forms — a common simplified form ( 元 ) and a formal form ( 圆 / 圓 ) used to prevent alterations and accounting mistakes.

  20. Renminbi units • One yuan is divided into 10 jiao ( 角 ) • One jiao is divided into 10 fen ( 分 ) • 3.45 yuan would be spoken of as "3 yuan 4 jiao 5 fen"

  21. Symbol of RMB • Although shop prices in the PRC are usually marked with 元 after the digits, a Y with two crossbars (¥) before the numeral digits is also common. The mark below indicates 9元

  22. RMB series • The denominations available are ¥0.01, ¥0.02, ¥0.05 ¥0.1, ¥0.2, ¥0.5 ¥1, ¥2, ¥3, ¥5, ¥10, ¥20, ¥50, ¥100
