  5. Finding Them • Web site search • Reference USA • Google Search engine • Monster.com keyword search

  6. Process 1. Define your ideal type of employer (I.e. roller coaster). 2. Find the employers that manufacture or support that industry. (Google, Monster) 3. Hit their websites, apply on-line.

  7. Process (con’t) 5. Find a phone number and name. (reference USA) 6. Cover letter and resume to a real person 7. Call the real person 8. Try to set up an interview

  8. Integrate the Best of the Internet in Your Search • Surfing the web can waste hours of precious time • Easy to get overwhelmed and start sending out hundreds of resumes • Many job seekers develop the eBay syndrome

  9. B4 You Log-On • Establish boundaries • Only look for jobs/companies of which you are interested • If you see a particular company that you want to work for, send an inquiry

  10. If You Use the Big Boards • Establish a personal account • Establish a professional email • Look only at new jobs • Keep track of HR manager’s names • Integrate key word search practices into your job search

  11. Take the Road Less Traveled... • Industry specific websites • Use trade publications and their websites • Join an industry association • Company specific websites • Use the traditional approach to sending your resume

How to Get a Real Person’s Name • Use ReferenceUSA to get a phone number • Call the phone number, • “Hello, this is Alice Camuti, I need to mail something to the Director of Engineering, could you please tell me their name? What is their official title? Thank you very much, Ms. (what was your name?) You have been very helpful.

  13. Next Step • Send the letter and resume • In your letter state that you will call them regarding opportunities • Give the mail about a week • Call that phone number again and ask to be transferred

  14. Final Thoughts • Your first job won’t be your life’s job • Research reflects that people change jobs/companies/careers every 3.2 years • Your job should be fun • Don’t just take a job for the money
