  2. Description Read more Drought is a common problem and the easiest way to deal with it is to plan for it. While individual needs will vary, these tips are a good start! Prepare your soil. Soil that holds moisture is best suited to fight drought. Because most garden soil doesn’t naturally hold moisture well, a little preparation is required: Mix 2 to 4 inches of organic matter—bark, compost manure, rotted sawdust, or aged grass clippings are all good options—into the top 8 to 10 inches of soil per every 100 square feet. Be sure that dirt and organic matter are evenly mixed. Mulch. Mulch. Mulch. Mulched soil retains moisture. It also allows water to penetrate deeper, which stops water-robbing weeds from growing. Spread mulch—which can be made of organic or inorganic materials—in a 2- to 4-inch layer over all beds, taking care to make sure that it doesn’t touch plant stems. Reduce lawn size. A lush, green lawn gets that way only with a lot of water. Reducing lawn size is one of the quickest ways to minimize water consumption. Consider converting edges of the lawn to garden beds filled with native shrubs, trees, and flowers that are water-lean and drought tolerant. Read more Rethink lawn care. Leave clippings on the lawn, stop fertilizing, and avoid weed killers. All of these practices keep grass healthier and not so thirsty. Also: Mow only when needed (mowing grass when it’s taller shades roots and promotes a deeper root system) and in the evening, when temps are cooler and clipped grass loses less moisture. Plan plantings based on water needs. Place more drought-resistant plants together farthest from the house, in the hot sun. Thirsty plants should be planted closer to the house; if water rationing is imposed, you can easily carry household wastewater to the closer plants. Consider xeriscaping. A landscape filled with drought-resistant plants (also known as a “xeriscape―) not only requires far less water but also is easier to maintain in general—a real benefit all around in the heat of summer! Look for plants with silvery, hairy, or waxy leaves (all of which insulate the plant to prevent water loss) or thick and fleshy succulents.
