  2. All juniors at WHS, All juniors in Randolph County and All juniors in North Carolina! Who is tested

  3. WHAT is the ACT??? • The ACT is a college and career readiness assessment to assist students for success. • It is one of the two college placement exams, (SAT is the other)that you will be able to use for college admissions. Both at the 4 yr and 2 yr colleges/universities • The ACT usually cost $49.50, HOWEVER, this will be FREE to all students and you can use it as one of your admissions exams!!!

  4. What is tested??? • The test is made up of 5 individual test! • English Test (75 items, 45 minutes) • Content: Usage/Mechanics • Punctuation (13%) • Basic Grammar and Usage (16%) • Sentence Structure (24%) • Rhetorical Skills • Strategies (16%) • Organization (15%) • Style (16%)

  5. ACT Mathematics • This part of the test is 60 items, and you have 60 minutes per item. • Pre Algebra, and Elementary Algebra (23% , 17%) • Intermediate Algebra and Coord. Geometry (15%, 15%) • Plan Geometry and Trigonometry (23%, 7%)

ACT READING TEST • 40 items, 35minutes • Social Studies and Natural Sciences (25%, 25%) • History, Political Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physical Sciences • Arts and Literature • Prose Fiction (25%) • Humanities (25%) (art history, art, music, philosophy, theater, architecture, dance, religion/ethics, literary criticism)

  7. ACT SCIENCE TEST • 40 items, 35 minutes • Interpretation analysis, evaluation, reasoning, and problem-solving skills in Biology, Earth/Space Sciences, Chemistry, and Physics • Data Representation (38%) • Research Summaries (45%) • Conflicting Viewpoints (17%)

  8. ACT Writing Test • 1 prompt, 30 minutes to write • Measures writing skills emphasized in high school English classes and in entry-level college composition courses. Consists of one 30-minute essay. • If you have sloppy handwriting make sure you print! If they can’t read it, you won’t get full credit!

  9. How is it scored • Each section is scored on a scale of 1-36 vs. the 200-800 point scale that the SAT uses. • Highest score on the ACT is a 36, Highest score on the SAT is a 2400. • DO NOT OMIT anything…You get penalized if you omit, you DO NOT get penalized if you guess wrong!

  10. ACT compared to SAT • The ACT and SAT are different tests that measure similar but distinct constructs. The ACT measures achievement related to high school curricula, while the SAT measures general verbal and quantitative reasoning!

Test-Taking Strategies for the ACT • Pace yourself • There are time limits set on each test! • The English, Reading and Science test contain a considerable amount of text, it is important to pace yourself so you will not spend too much time on one passage. • The teacher in the room will announce when you have five minutes remaining on each test!

  13. Read the directions for each test carefully! • Before you begin the tests, read the directions carefully! • The Science, English and Reading Tests ask for the “BEST” answer. DO NOT respond as soon as you identify a correct answer-BUT THE BEST ANSWER! • The Math test ask for the “CORRECT” answer. Read each question carefully to make sure you understand the type of answer required. • Reread the question and consider all of the answer choices!

  14. Read each question carefully! • It is important that you understand what each question asks. Some questions will require you to go through several steps to find the correct or best answer, while others can be answered more quickly.

  15. Answer the easy questions first! • The best strategy for taking the test is to answer the easy questions and skip the questions you find difficult. • After answering all of the easy questions, go back and answer the more difficult questions if you have time. • Do Not Leave Anything Blank-if you don’t know pick a letter and stick with the same letter for all the questions you don’t know! (i.e.B is BEST)

  16. Use logic on more difficult questions! • When you go back to more difficult questions, try to use logic to eliminate incorrect answers to a question. • Compare the answer choices to each other and not how they differ. • Such differences may provide clues as to what the question requires. • Eliminate as many incorrect answers as you can, then make an educated guess from the remaining answers.

  17. Answer EVERY question • Your score on the test will be based only on the number of questions that you answer correctly! • THERE IS NO PENALTY FOR GUESSING!!! • You should answer every question within the time allowed for each test, even if you have to guess.

  18. Review your work! • If there is time left after you have answered every question in a test, go back and check your work on that test. • Check to be sure, that you marked only on response to each question. • You will not be allowed to go back to any other test or mark responses to a test after time has been called on that test.

  19. Preparing for Test Day • Be confident in your ability to do well on the ACT. • YOU CAN DO WELL! • Be prepared to work hard • Know what to expect on test day. Familiarize yourself with examples of the test questions- • www.actstudent.org

  20. Preparing for Test Day Continued • Take a practice test and review your responses so you will feel comfortable about this test! • Prepare well in advance for the tests. Do not leave preparation to the last minute. • Get plenty of rest the night before the tests so you will feel your best!

  21. Getting Ready For Test Day • Thursday and Friday February 23 and 24th-last names A-K will meet in the cafeteria during round table to fill out pre-administration background information. • Monday and Tuesday February 27 and 28th- last names L-Z will meet in the cafeteria during round table to fill out pre-administration back ground information • Bring a #2 pencil!!!
