  23. “Ask not what your District can do for you, but what you can do for your District.”

  24. Focus Group Feedback BACKGROUND • The Satori Group, Ltd. was asked to develop and facilitate a series of focus groups . • The focus groups were conducted in the Fall of 2013 and will be repeated in the Spring of 2014. • Purpose: To ensure that key stakeholder concerns are being addressed proactively. • Nineteen (19) focus groups were conducted in the Fall series, each having duration of 60-90 minutes. • Stakeholder participant groups were divided by grade level as follows: High School Parents, Students, Teachers and Staff; Middle School Parents, Students, Teachers and Staff; and Elementary Parents. The focus group questions and facilitation were designed to generate discussion about the 2014 transition to one middle school and one high school covering topics such as: • Safety • Extracurricular Activities • Transportation • Scheduling • Community Involvement

  25. Focus Group Feedback – The Unknown • The greatest concern for all stakeholders is the unknown. They are eager for communication, communication and more communication. They want as much information as possible as early as possible. Even if all the details have not been worked out, participants want to be trusted with what can be shared and to know what the tentative plans are. The more they know, the less anxious they are. • Teachers and Staff have the greatest anxiety and fear of the unknown. They are hungry for details about job placements, course offerings, and the timing and logistics of the physical move. Their concern, however, is clearly with the student’s best interest in mind. Teachers and Staff want to feel comfortable so they can better assist students and help make the transition the great opportunity that it has been promised to be.

  26. Unknowns • Student Safety/Emergency Preparedness/Building Access • Transportation/Bus Schedules/Congestion/Parking • Increased size (physical layout of the school, student body and class size) • Having enough extracurricular opportunities to include as many students as possible • Logistics of the physical move • Building Access/Early Access • Master Schedule

  27. Focus Group Feedback – Safety and Transportation • Safety is of paramount importance to all stakeholders. They feel it needs to be a top priority for the District. A number of safety concerns raised by stakeholders are related to the large school environment that will be created by the combined schools. All focus group participants want to feel that they and/or their children are safe in the school environment. Most feel that safety has not been a priority thus far. • Transportation is a critical concern. The top two issues include busing and traffic flow in and around the schools. Again, communication is a vital piece to helping stakeholders feel more comfortable.

  28. Safety and Transportation • Safety • Major priority • Cameras • Access to building • Transportation • Time change at all 3 levels • Communication for families • City students riding for the 1st time • Late Bus

  29. Focus Group Feedback – Opportunities and Excitement • Stakeholders have been told that the transition to one middle school and one high school is supposed to bring more and better opportunities to all; however, at this point, they feel like opportunities are being taken away. This is especially true with some of the larger extracurricular activities such as band, drama and modified sports. • Overall, student focus group participants are excited about the transition, citing that they are looking forward to making new friends and having new opportunities for class selection and extracurricular activities. They hope the transition will create a more united town

  30. Perceptions Are Not Reality! • High School participants feel that there are two distinct cultures between the current buildings. • WHS participants feel they are the “outsiders” and will be treated as such. • EHS participants feel like the “powers that be” are largely from WHS and therefore, they are not well represented.

  31. Packing and Moving Reminders • Weeding out • Packing and labeling • Send your questions and concerns to the Transition Team
