  2. Development • 1999 – The beginning of the program – works under the Center for social work in Celje • 2002 – Shelter becomes a business unit of JZ Socio

  3. Employees • 1 chief of department • 4 full time employees • 2 public workers • 4 volunteers

  4. Cooperation: • Center for social work Celje, • Municipality of Celje, • Health centre Celje, • Psychiatrically hospital Vojnik, • Regional Red Cross and Karitas organization, • Pensioners association, • St. Jožef church,…

  5. In wider environment we cooperate with: • Centres for social work, • Chamber for social affairs, • Ministry of labour, family and social affairs, • Faculty for social work, • Other shelters in Slovenia.

  6. Programme is financed by Ministry of labour, family and social affairs, Municipality of Celje, regional municipalities, our residents and donations.

  7. How do we work? • Open: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week  constant presence of employees. • Future resident must submit a request for admission, a medical opinion, a proof about monetary welfare or pension. • We arrange health insurance and personal documents.

  8. Homeless are included in a programme voluntarily! Residents can give proposals and remarks. Employees inform residents about events in Shelter.

  9. Residents must be 18 years old or more, Upper age limit does not exist, The resident must be capable of taking care of himself. Unfortunately, residence in Shelter means the last “life stop” for many.

  10. Shelter capacity • 25 beds  18 for men and 7 for women • 1/3 residents are for Municipality of Celje, others come from other municipalities and regions from Slovenia • The average age of residents is 53.

  11. We assure: • Warm meal every day, • Means for maintenance of personal hygiene, • Personal hygiene necessities, • Footwear and clothes,

  12. Besides that…… • We help residents with settling different matters, • We offer informing and consultancy (status, documents, social skills trainings,…), • Working in groups, • Other joint activities.

  13. Our residents took part in World football championship for homeless in Denmark.

  14. It is strictly forbidden to: • Fight, • Bring alcoholdrinks into the shelter, • Bring forbidden drugs into the shelter, • Smoke inside the shelter.

  15. How can we see our program is effective? • Residents are very related to the Shelter, • We can see mutual trust between residents and employees, • Residents gained hygienic conduct, • There are fewer accidents, injuries and incidents, • Residents take care of interiors and surroundings of the shelter, • Residents get along and mutually help themselves, • In most cases residents do not want to leave the shelter.

  16. What do we urgently need? • More space! • Medically and sanitarily nursing (for acute and chronic diseases)! • Nursing for aged homeless!

  17. Homelessness is relatively new phenomenon in Slovene society. There are 900 to 1300 homeless people in Slovenia  50 in Celje. There is a difference between a bum and a homeless. Opened centres in Slovenia: Celje, Ljubljana, Maribor, Murska Sobota, Slovenj Gradec, Kočevje, Kranj
