  1. InfraCal TOG/TPH Analyzer, Model HATR-T2Extraction Procedure www.WilksIR.com

  2. Collect a measured amount of sample

  3. For samples that will be stored for more than a day or for samples with a high pH: Adjust the pH to less than 2 with Hydrochloric acid or Sulfuric Acid (typically 3-5 drops depending on buffers in sample)

  4. 10 parts sample to 1 part solvent • Add Solvent For example: For 150 ml of sample add 15 ml of solvent

  5. 10 parts sample to 1 part solvent • Add Solvent For example: For 150 ml of sample add 15 ml of perchloroethylene

  6. Shake for 2 minutes

  7. Open the cap on the bottle during the 2 minute shaking to relieve the pressure

  8. Hexane is lighter than water and will float on the top of the sample

  9. Using a syringe or pipette, take 50 microliters of solvent extract

  10. And deposit it in the center of the sample crystal

  11. Press the run button

  12. Oil concentration displayed 14

  13. Silica Gel Extraction The difference between TPH (Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon) and TOG (Total Oil and Grease) is the polar organics are removed from the extract using silica gel. The remaining hydrocarbons are the non-polar components considered to be TPH

  14. Silica Gel Extraction • Put filter paper into funnel • Add silica

  15. Silica Gel Extraction • Put filter paper into funnel • Add silica • Put funnel into bottle • Put solvent extract through silica gel

  16. Silica Gel Extraction • Put filter paper into funnel • Add silica • Put funnel into bottle • Put solvent extract through silica gel • Using a 50 microliter syringe or pipette deposit on the center of the sample plate crystal

  17. Press the run button
