  1. Discussion: The Future Direction of MASFAA Sunday, October 6, 2013 3-4 p.m. MASFAA Research Committee representatives: Jim Eddy, Jane Hojan-Clark, Ted Malone

  2. Ongoing Strategic Planning • Exec Board actively visits/revisits MASFAA Strategic Plan • This session is designed to elicit member feedback to contribute toward that effort • Core mission may be unchanged, but environment for delivering service may in fact be changing

  3. MASFAA Core Mission The Midwest Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (MASFAA) is a regional organization of individuals engaged in or concerned with the ethical administration and/or support of student financial aid. Our mission is to promote and provide quality training and professional development opportunities, to advocate and support financial aid programs, and to facilitate effective communication and coordination among interrelated professional associations, thereby serving the needs and interests of students and postsecondary institutions.

  4. Current Realities • Training and communication technologies are constantly evolving • There are now many organizations offering training/advocacy (FSA, NASFAA, Regional, State, Guaranty Agency, private vendors) • MASFAA is an individual membership organization, but one dependent upon institutional budget support – and budgets are tightening

  5. SWOT approach • Strengths (internal) • Weaknesses (internal) • Opportunities (external) • Threats (external)

  6. Suggested ways to use SWOT thinking in open discussion • “One of MASFAA’s strengths has always been…” • “One weakness of our regional association we should consider is…” • “There may now be an opportunity for MASFAA to …” • “These overlapping services may be a threat to MASFAA as it tries to…”

  7. We will capture today’s shared ideas and provide them to the Exec Board as a contribution to their strategic planning efforts

  8. Further Feedback • MASFAA Research Committee Chair • Bob Andersen, Director of Financial Aid, Western Illinois University • R-Andersen@wiu.edu • MASFAA Leadership page: • http://www.masfaaweb.org/docs/toc_leadership.html
