  2. What do we use technology for? • Technology has advanced greatly in our generation. Using technology helps make job less of a hassle! • From phones to social media, we use technology in everything we do, every single day! • There are many tidbits and tricks on how to utilize technology to make your life much easier.

  3. Technology Topics • Email Tools • Chats & Conferences • Useful Computer Programs • Social Media • Facebook Events, Twitter Feeds • Professionalism • Security

  4. Email Tools (more specifically, Gmail )

  5. Gmail Tools: Labels & Filters • Create labels to organize different types of emails • Choose colors to distinguish from each category • To create labels, select a few emails and click “Labels” or “Move to” and a Create new option will appear

  6. Gmail Tools: Tasks • Tasks keeps track of what you need to accomplish • Tasks is located under the Gmail logo dropdown menu (along with contacts) • It’s more a sticky note than an agenda • Google Tasks syncs with your smartphone!

  7. Gmail Tools: Boomerang • Internet Browser add-on that allows you to extend the use of Gmail! • Automatically email messages to the time you want • Boomerang can automatically bounce back emails that contain important deadlines

Word Processors & Alternatives • You SHOULD use Microsoft Office • To ensure compatibility • More feature-rich and widely-accepted • …but you can also try these free alternatives: • Google Docs • Works on every platform with a web browser! • Live, collaborative editing • Syncs with Google Drive and can be edited/accessed from a smartphone!

  10. File Management & Clouds Cloud storage – upload and share files of all types. Syncs to your smartphone and folders on all of your PCs! Google Drive 2GB freeand integrated with Google services Dropbox 2GB free, works on nearly every platform. Lots of free storage can be added easily. Evernote Syncs notes with your computer, the web, and your smartphone! Other notable services: Sugarsync, Box, SkyDrive, iCloud …but Dropbox and Google Drive are more usable!

Chats & Conferencing • Using Chats & Conferences are a great way to communicate! • Popular video chat services include oovoo and Skype • Google Hangouts – also fantastic • Google Talk – chat right from your Gmail inbox! • Facebook is fun and convenient, but keep things civil and use email for business matters. • Avoid the drama! • Keep business and personal lives separate! • Remember, you are a representative of all our member and this district!

  14. Utilizing Social Media Social Media is a great form of communication. Easy to relay information in a fast and efficient manner. Youtube, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, and other media-sharing sites.

  15. Facebook Events • Facebook is a great tool you can use as an advertising platform. This is great for mass-announcements, event invitations and reminders. • Reminder: Don’t use Facebook for Business! It should just be used as a marketing tool! • BEE mindful of what you post! Remember, your name is still attached to the events. • YOU are representative of this organization!

Twitter Feeds • Twitter is also a great form of advertising and communication! • You can send simple reminders and alerts to members about events, projects, and meetings. • If you have a smartphone, Twitter is HIGHLY accessible and posting updates is very easy! • Twitter has security settings that allow you control who views your tweets. • Tip: Create a separate Twitter account for members to follow to get club updates and event reminders!

  18. REMINDER: WITH GREAT POWER COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY TRY TO… AVOID… • Rants, gossiping, profanity • Cyber bullying • Discrimination • Inappropriate topics or discussions • Express yourself in a positive manner. • Post family friendly content • Share positive interests

  19. Security • Your safety comes first! • Be aware of your audience. • Keep your accounts and events secure. • This is public on the web – only invite people you know! • You don’t want random people showing up to your planned events.

  21. Closing Reminders Your computer is important for your work, so take care of it! Install software only from sources you trust. Some software includes toolbars and other junk – read your install prompts when adding new programs! If you think you have a virus, run diagnose the problem as soon as possible! When using social media, be aware of what you post and who you invite! BEE professional and safe!
