  2. Police Careers • Federal (RCMP) • Provincial (ex OPP) • Municipal (ex FPF) • Every police officer starts in General Duty Policing and most stay there for the remainder of their careers

  3. Realities of Policing • High Divorce Rate • Decreased Life Span • Shift Work • Police and Military are the only Canadian Citizens who are not protected from Double Jeopardy (Police Act) – high level of acountability

  4. Training Academys • Atlantic Police Academy • Depot (RCMP) • Western Provinces and Ontario • It varies from place to place as to Tuition Fees and employment status after training.

  5. Admission Requirements • Canadian Citizen or Landed Immigrant Status • 19 years of age by program start date • Grade 12 or equivalent with credits at or above the general level • Must hold a valid Canadian driver's license • Keyboarding Certificate - with a speed of 20 wpm • (First Aid training is usually a requirement)

  6. Application Process • Written Test • Physical Test (PARE or some equivalent) • Medical/Vision screening(usually at applicant’s expense) Note: RCMP requires dental exam as well. Some agencies require prior immunization for Hep-C etc. • Psychological Testing • Background Check (may or may not involve Polygraph) • Final Interview

  7. Further Considerations • Exact application processes vary from location to location • Number of applicants and available jobs vary from location to location and they vary by time • Many applicants are not successful on their first try • Average age of a new hire is 25 yrs or so
