  2. A Abolitionist- a person who strongly favors doing away with slavery Ambush- surprise attack Amendment- an addition to a formal document, such as the constitution Anti-federalists- individuals who opposed ratification of the constitution

  3. B Boomtown- a community experiencing a sudden growth in business or population Bicameral- consisting of two houses , or chambers, especially in a legislature Boycott- to refuse to buy items from a particular country Burgesses- elected representatives to an assembly

  4. C Cabinet- a group of advisers to the president Cash crop- farm crop raised to be sold for money Constitution- a formal plan of government Civil War- conflict between opposing groups of citizens of the same country

  5. D Debtor- a person or country that owes money Depreciate- to fall in value Desert- to leave without permission Disarmment- removal of weapons

  6. E Emancipate- to free from slavery Embargo- an order prohibiting trade with another country Entrenched- occupying a strong defensive position Export- to sell goods abroad

  7. F Famine- an extreme shortage of food Freedman- a person freed from slavery Frigate- warship Fugitive- runaway or trying to run away

G Genocide- the deliberate destruction of a radical, political, or cultural group Global warming- a steady increase in average world temperature Greenback- a piece of U.S. paper money first issued by the North during the Civil War Guerrilla warfare- hit and run technique used in fighting a war

H Habeas corpus- a legal order for an inquiry to determine whether a person has been lawfully prisoned Hieroglyphics- ancient form of writing using symbols and pictures to represent words, sounds, and concepts Holocaust- name given to the mass slaughter of Jews and other groups by the Nazis during World War 2 Horizontal integregation- the combining of competing firms into one corperation

  13. L Legislative branch- branch of government that makes the nations laws Lexington- where 1st shots of the American Revolution were fired Lee, Robert E.- confederate general during the Civil War Laissez- faire- policy that government should interfere as little as possible in the nations eonomy

M Manifest Destiny- the idea popular in the U.S. during the 1800s that the country must expand its boundaries to the Pacific Mayflower Compact- a formal document, written in 1620, that provided law and order to the Plymouth colony Magna Carta- limited government, in which the power of the king or government was limited Marbury v. Madison- court case that let the court define if it is right to determine whether a law violates the constitution
