  2. Reading Assessment Question • What is the reason that De Guiche sends the Capuchin to Roxane? • How does she turn his letter around?

Act Three Summary • Setting: the house of Roxane. • Ragueneau’s wife has left him because she hates poets and his business is ruined. • Roxane and her Duenna are on their way to see the Tender Passion. • They met Cyrano on their way, who has won some pages for the day. • Roxane tells Cyrano that she believes Christian to be intellectual after all of the letters he has sent her and that Cyrano must be jealous of Christian’s poetry. • De Guiche comes to Roxane and tells her he has gotten promoted to Colonel orders to leave with the Cadets (Christian and Cyrano).

More Summary • De Guiche wants to stay with Roxane but she tells him not to disobey his orders; however, she gets him to release the Cadets from the order to leave with him. • Cyrano gets Roxane to reveal the topic of tonight with Christian. • Christian doesn’t want Cyrano’s help in wooing Roxane anymore and decides to talk to her as him self. • Christian fails miserably. • Christian begs Cyrano to help him woo her before he loses her and instead talks to Roxane as Christian hidden by the night.

Even More Summary • Cyrano pours his heart out to Roxane but she believes he is Christian. • De Guiche sends a Capuchin with a letter telling Roxane that he has disobeyed orders and that he is coming to see her. • Roxane lies when she reads the letter aloud saying that De Guiche has given permission for Roxane and Christian to be married. • Roxane has Cyrano stand outside and stall De Guiche however he can. • Roxane and Christian are married.

  6. Last Of The Summary • Cyrano stalls De Guiche by acting practically insane. • De Guiche finds out Christian and Roxane have been married and sends the Cadets to the front of the line. • Roxane makes Cyrano promise to keep Christian honest, safe, etc., and to write to her everyday.

Emerging Themes/Motifs/Symbols Deception: • Cyrano deceives De Guicheinto thinking he is another man and distracts him enough so that he can’t interrupt the wedding. • Roxane deceives the Capuchin into thinking that De Guiche and the Cardinal have given permission for Roxane and Christian to be married. Love: • Christian and Roxane get married after Cyrano makes Roxane fall in love with “Christian’s words”. • De Guiche disobeys orders to leave and stays to see Roxane.

  8. Emerging Themes/Motifs/Symbols Revenge: • De Guiche orders the Cadets (Christian and Cyrano) to the front lines at once after learning of Roxane and Christian’s marriage. Masks: • Cyrano uses the dark to mask that he is talking to Roxane instead of Christian. • De Guiche uses a mask to try and sneak to see Roxane at night.

  9. Emerging Themes/Modtifs/Symbols Cleverness: • Roxane reads the letter but doesn’t read what is written on it when she reads aloud to everyone. Language: • Christian makes Roxane hate him when he doesn’t speak intellectually about love. • Cyrano woos Roxane with his words in the dark of the night.

  12. Passage Analysis Roxane: “But Cyrano? What will you do to him? Order him into danger? He loves that! I know what I should do.” De Guiche: “What?” Roxane: “Leave him here with his cadets, while all the regiment goes onto glory! That would torture him-to sit all through the war with folded arms-I know his nature. If you hate that man, strike at his self esteem. “

  13. Passage Analysis Situation- • De Guiche is telling Roxane that all the men of France have been ordered to the front line. Roxane is worried for Christian, so she tricks De Guiche into leaving them behind. Significance- • It shows Roxane’s complete love for Christian, but also her cleverness. Instead of appearing to be concerned for Christian, she shows her selfishness because she sits Cyrano out of a good fight.

Connections • Cyrano uses cavalier poetry to talk to Roxane. • This makes her deeply fall in love with Christian because she believes it is him and not Cyrano. • The poetry uses figurative language to express his feeling in a straight forward manor. • Cyrano uses poetry casually, and it is an important part of his life.

Romanticism • Appeal to emotions- Christian has Cyrano speak for him because he is so deeply in love with Roxane and is bad with words. • Importance of the individual- Cyrano makes a fool of himself in front of De Guiche in order to keep him from interrupting the wedding. • Imagination over reason- Roxane twists the words of the letter from De Guiche in order to marry Christian. • Nature- The moon covers up Cyrano’s identity when he is speaking for Christian to Roxane.
