  1. How often should I really visit the Dentist?

  2. How often should I really visit the Dentist? As we all know, regular visits to the dentist are an important part of looking after our teeth. For years, we’ve been told that we need to visit our dentist twice a year. But why? Is that still the case? How often should we really visit? In our latest blog, we look at why dentists recommend two visits per year, how this helps your teeth and if two visits is right for everyone.

  3. The origins of the two visits per year recommendation It’s not clear where the initial six-month check up recommendation actually came from. Some say that over 50 years ago, examinations of people entering the military showed that Americans' teeth were in pretty bad shape, and this is where the recommendation began. Others, say it all started when this was suggested in Pepsodent toothpaste commercials. Why do dentists continue to recommend two visits per year? Well, dental hygiene and teeth care is so important. Left unchecked, small problems can become much worse and lead to more costly treatments down the line.

  4. Why should your teeth be checked regularly? This brings us to the question of why our teeth should be checked regularly. Cavities and gum disease are preventable, so having your teeth checked regularly by a professional, ensures any concerns are identified early. This early detection, reduces the chance of developing painful ailments or medical conditions later. A simple filling for example, could turn into a 2-3 appointment root canal procedure (which can become more expensive), if not addressed quickly. Have private health insurance? Don’t forget that your fund may cover you for 2 check-ups per calendar year!

  5. Do some people need more than two visits per year? Your dentist may recommend you come more, or less, depending on your individual dental health. Examples of people who may need to visit their dentist more often are: ● ● ● ● ● Smokers Pregnant women Diabetics People with current gum disease People with a weak immune response to bacterial infection

  6. Can some people get away with less than two visits per year? Like people who need to visit the dentist more often, there are people who could potentially visit less (only if recommended by their dentist of course). These people are usually extremely healthy, have no history of cavities or gum disease and are extremely meticulous with their brushing and flossing habits. If this sounds like you, ask your dentist how many visits a year is best for your oral health. So, what’s the verdict? How often should we really visit the dentist? Every person, set of teeth, mouth health and lifestyle are different, so only your dentist can tell you how often you should be visiting them. Ask them next time you visit. Better yet, why not ask us? Book an appointment with your local Bellbowrie Dentist at Karana Downs Dental today.
