  3. Status report: from GDE/RD to LCC • Global Design Effort (GDE) and Research Directorate (RD) completed their mission by the completion of the Technical Design Report (TDR). • The TDR is a self-contained comprehensive R&D report; with a design based on new baseline; a new value costing; and a section on project implementation planning. Interactions meeting @IHEP, Beijing

  4. Status report: from GDE/RD to LCC • TDR has been reviewed carefully • Dec 2012: • Completed the final draft • Dec 2012: • Technical Review by augmented PAC (at KEK) • Jan 2013: • Cost Review by international committee (at Orsay) • Feb 2013: • TDR Overall Review by ILCSC (at Vancouver) Interactions meeting @IHEP, Beijing

  5. Status report: from GDE/RD to LCC • New body to promote world LC activities, Linear Collider Collaboration (LCC)lead by Lyn Evans, was officially established on 21 February at the ICFA meeting held at TRIUMF. • Revise, rewrite; finalize and submit to ICFA at LP2013(June 2013). GDE Mandate will be completed, and the LC activities will be fully taken over by LCC . Interactions meeting @IHEP, Beijing

  6. By the way, what is LCB? • Purpose: • LCB is created as a sub-panel of ICFA (International Committee for Future Accelerators). • LCB will promote the construction of an electron-positron linear collider and its detectors as a world-wide collaboration project. • The LCB will be responsible for the science, technology, outreach, and organization in pursuit linear collider project. • Mission: • LCB will • establish Linear collider directorate headed by the LC Director • provide oversight to the LC Directorate (LCD) • work with Funding Agencies for Large Colliders (FALC) • set up Project Advisory Committee (PAC) • monitor the progress of LC activities through the LC Director and PAC Chair, and • monitor the outreach of LCD, regional and other groups to the scientific community, to industry, to government officials, and to the public. Interactions meeting @IHEP, Beijing

  7. Who are LCB? • 5 members X 3 regions + chair + secretary Chair: Sachio Komamiya (The University of Tokyo) Secretary: Roy Rubinstein Americas Jonathan Bagger (Johns Hopkins Univ) The Fermilab Director (Pier Oddone) David MacFarlane (SLAC) LiaMerminga(TRIUMF) Hugh Montgomery (Jefferson Lab) Asia JieGao(IHEP) RohiniGodbole (Indian Institure of Science) SunkeeKim (RISP) AtsutoSuzuki (KEK) YifangWang (IHEP) Europe The CERN Director-General (Rolf Heuer) The DESY Director of Particle Physics (Joachim Mnich) Francois Le Diberder (IN2P3) The JINR Director (Victor Matveev) Lenny Rivkin(PSI) Interactions meeting @IHEP, Beijing

  8. What is LCC? • LCC is the organisation to realize the construction of the Linear Collider. • LCC will • carry through “post–TDR ILC program: 1) extend energy reach; 2) systems tests; 3)evolve ILC design based on technology development and LHC results; consider staged design, beginning with Higgs Factory. • prepare CLIC machine and detectors as an option for a future high-energy linear collider at CERN. • further improve collaboration between CLIC and ILC machine experts • move towards a “more normal” structure of collaboration in the detector community to prepare for the construction of two high-performance detectors. • strongly support the Japanese initiative to construct a linear collider as a staged project in Japan. Interactions meeting @IHEP, Beijing

  9. Who are LCC? GDE + RD + CLIC = LCC • Director: Lyn Evans (CERN) • Deputy Director: Hitoshi Murayama (IPMU) • ILC: Mike Harrison • CLIC: Steiner Stapnes • Physics & Detector: • Hitoshi Yamamoto • Regional advisor will be appointed Interactions meeting @IHEP, Beijing

  10. LCC Communication? • Team 4 communicators: Pan Qian (IHEP), Barbara Warmbein(DESY) PerrineRoyole-Degieux(CNRS/IN2P3, she is back!) Rika Takahashi (KEK) Now we are taking care of both ILC and CLIC communications. We are not sure what will happen after June, though…. Interactions meeting @IHEP, Beijing

  11. What we have done • December 2012: • Handover ceremony on • 15 December in Tokyo, Japan • Over 30 journalists • Good coverage on newspapers • despite the lower house election • held next day • Video streamed via Youstream. • 200+ viewers Interactions meeting @IHEP, Beijing

  12. What we have done • February 2013 • Press conference on • 21 February in Vancouver, Canada • Over 20 journalists at Tokyo venue • Good coverage on newspapers • around the world Interactions meeting @IHEP, Beijing

  13. What we have done • New logo, new website, new NewsLine Interactions meeting @IHEP, Beijing

  14. What’s next? • TDR will be published and a worldwide event will be held on 12 June at three venues in Tokyo, Geneva, and Chicago. • Communicators are editing new outreach document • “International Linear Collider • from design to reality” Interactions meeting @IHEP, Beijing

  15. World around the ILC - Europe • European strategy: • There is a strong scientific case for an electron-positron collider, complementary to the LHC, that can study the properties of the Higgs boson and other particles with unprecedented precision and whose energy can be upgraded. • The Technical Design Report of the International Linear Collider (ILC) has been completed, with large European participation. • The initiative from the Japanese particle physics community to host the ILC in Japan is most welcome, and European groups are eager to participate. Europe looks forward to a proposal from Japan to discuss a possible participation. Interactions meeting @IHEP, Beijing

  16. World around the ILC - US • HEPAP Facilities Subpanel 22 March 2013 • The discovery of the Higgs boson reinforces the strong scientific case for the International LinearCollider (ILC). • The ILC accelerator and detectors enable a research program that will address questions of very great scientific importance, and both the accelerator and the detectors are absolutely central. • The initiative from the Japanese particle physics community to host the ILC in Japan is very welcome, and the U.S. particle physics community looks forward to a proposal from Japan to discuss possible participation. technical design report for the accelerator facility was recently completed; the ILC accelerator is technically readyto initiate construction once agreements are reached in Japan and internationally. • Detailed baseline designs for the detectors have been completed; however, engineering remains before the ILC detectors are ready to initiate construction, and for this reason the readiness classification significant scientific/engineering challenges to resolve before initiating construction is assigned. Interactions meeting @IHEP, Beijing

  17. Japan & ILC • 12 July 2012 : Second Recommendations: Creation of Global Cities by hosting the International Linear Collider (ILC) issued by Japan Policy Council • February 2012 : Association of the Diet member for ILC restarted their activities. Now they are having study session every week. • 10 and 18 March: Total of 14 Diet members visited KEK. Interactions meeting @IHEP, Beijing

  18. Japan & ILC • Tug-of-war between two candidate sites is being heated up. => 48 articled regarding ILC invitation in one month. • Local government officers are visiting CERN one after another. • 2 April 2013: Japan Association of Cooperate Executives issued recommendation to exercise the leadership on ILC Project. Interactions meeting @IHEP, Beijing

  19. Japan & ILC • Lyn Evans met Prime Minister Abe, and two ministers in charge of national science & technology policy. • He also had meeting with industrial leaders, Diet members, and other influencers in just three days. Interactions meeting @IHEP, Beijing

  20. Japan & ILC • Lyn’s message to Prime Minister • A big science project will inspire young students and get them interested in science and technology, create an international center for scientists from around the world, and have long-term economic impact in the region.  It was the case with CERN/LHC, and LC will be so, too.   • The will of participation is clear both in Europe and US, and they are waiting for the lead from Japanese government. • The site selection is clearly an issue, and it needs to be decided on purely technical points of view. Interactions meeting @IHEP, Beijing

  21. Site selection • Two candidate sites in Japan will become one Interactions meeting @IHEP, Beijing

  22. Site selection • KEK received the budget for site study in 2011. • Now site study in both sites are almost completed, and the report will be submitted to KEK by next month. • The siting committee consist of experts from various fields will examine each items (bed rock condition, existing city function, infrastructure, condition to accept foreigners…and more). • Then, they will choose one site, between July and September time frame.
