MECO CALORIMETER • The MECO Calorimeter provides the experimental trigger. • Choice: LEAD TUNGSTATE CRYSTAL • TEMPERATURE –24 degrees C • 4 VANES of 288 CRYSTALS for a total of 1152. • READOUT: 2 AVALANCHE PHOTODIODES/CRYSTAL • TRIGGER starts DATA acquisition. • Trigger electronics: PREAMPLIFIERS at detector. • SHAPER AMPLIFIERS outside cryostat. LEAD TUNGSTATE CRYSTALS • TECHNICAL CHOICE: FAST, HIGH DENSITY • low light yield improved by COOLING • Estimated COST: $ 6.00/cc • SOURCE: BOGORODITSK (Russia) • Supplied crystals to CMS experiment at CERN • And BTeV at FERMILAB • 1994 NYU cost (small order) $6.60cc • BTeV cost $5.70/cc • Alternate source: SHANGHAI INSTITUTE • At present cannot grow spec. AVALANCHE PHOTODIODES (APD) • TECHNICAL CHOICE: LOW LIGHT YIELD of PB-WO CRYSTALS compact, fast, low noise, large area APD’s work in large magnetic fields, to overcome low light yield. • Estimated COST : $750/APD • SOURCE: RADIATION MONITORING DEVICES (RMD) • Supplies APD’s for MEDICAL IMAGING • Large Area APD’s recently developed. • Supplied APD’s for NYU tests at $900/APD in small quantity • Alterante Sources: • ADVANCED PHOTONICS (some compatibility problems) • HAMAMATSU (relevant APD’s barely out). PREAMP & SHAPER AMP SYSTEM • PREMPS at DETECTOR in DS CRYOSTAT • SHAPER AMPS outside in MOVABLE COUNTING HOUSE • IN-HOUSE DESIGN to match NEEDS • 2304 channels plus 96 spares • Estimated COST: $120/channel comes from cost of each item, (ex. POWER SUPPLIES • NEED PRECISE HIGH VOLTAGE SUPPLY CHANNEL FOR EACH APD CHANNEL, CONTROLLED TO 1/2V because of GAIN SENSITIVITY to HV. • Estimated COST: $270/channel. • Source: CAEN commercial multichannel system. • Have used similar systems at Los Alamos National Laboratory • And FERMILAB. CABLES and CONNECTORS • HIGH VOLTAGE and SIGNAL CABLES for all 2304 CHNANNELS. • WILL FARM OUT MANUFACTURING OF CABLES, CONNECTORS AND HARNESSES TO COMMERCIAL VENDORS. • Estimated COST: $88/channel. • Based on vendor quotes on cables and cable assemblies. MECHANICAL HOUSING • DETECTOR has 4 VANES weighing ~500kg each HOUSED separately. • CRYSALS are suspended and located individually in low-mass Carbon Composite HONEYCOMB. • Honeycomb needs rigid support to connect to detector cage supporting the calorimeter. • Active Face of Crystal has minimal material in Front. • Coil Cooled Metal Thermal enclosure needed for Crystals and APD’s for cooling to –24deg. C. • Separate cooling enclosure for PREAMP’s behind APD’s. • Potential complication: gas volume for preamps may be needed if component heating in vacuum untenable. • Estimate cost: $40,000/vane. • This estimate is a best-guess based on local detector fabriction for previous experiments.   11. COOLING • CRYSTALS and APD’s need STABLE COOLING to –24deg. C. • Preamps, dissipating ~120W per vane, need cooling to same temperature. Separate refrigerators( outside crystat) and cooling circuits for Crystals and Preamps in each Vane: 8 systems. • Estimated COST : $10,000 per cooling system. • Based on remote system by JULABO, now used successfully at our NYU laboratory for prototype tests, scaled-up for larger capacity. Personnel Costs • Personnel Costs of $2,211K are estimated: • Electronics design, testing, and supervision of fabriction: $432K • Mechanical design, testing, and supervision of fabrication: $347K • Cooling System design, testing, and supervision of fabric: $152K • System testing and Assembly : $1,029K • Reconstruction analysis development: $248K • Personnel involved are: Electronic Technician, Senior Electronic Engineer, Mechanical Engineer and Designer, Senior Research Scientist, 1.5 Postdocs, 3/2 Graduate Students, 2 part-time Undergraduate Students and 2 Faculty.
