  1. FEELING INSECURE? November 17, 2013 Bible Passage: John 10:1-42

  2. These days, it seems as though every morning the news trumpets some threats that’s looming over us. Terrorism. Economic uncertainty. Cyberwarefare. Natural disaster. Virus epidemic. Power outage. Social upheaval. Yes, even killer asteroids. How can a person cope with it all? Security is an important part of life. We all want to feel secure and safe. We download software to protect our computers. We install security systems to protect our homes and businesses. Subconsciously, we hope that another person, a favorite place, or a piece of legislation might protect us from harm and hardship. Despite our best efforts, though, a sense of fear and insecurity seems to stalk our steps. In Jesus’ day – when people were no less challenged by feelings of insecurity than we are in our day – one of the most comforting, reassuring images imaginable was that of a shepherd caring tenderly and courageously for a flock of sheep. John’s Gospel uses this imagery to maximum effect to urge believers to find their ultimate security in the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ. He provides His people with a permanently secure relationship that cannot be erased, hacked, stolen, or destroyed.

  3. Jesus Guides Us (John 10:1-5) As you read this section, take note of the contrasts between good and false shepherds. Jesus Gave His Life for Us (John 10:14-18) As you read this section, identify the greatest expression of a true shepherd’s care for the sheep. Jesus Gives Us a Guarantee (John 10:25-30) In this section, take note of the threefold guarantee Jesus gives every believer.
