  3. Project Background • Road Safety Research has been Established in 2008, The Road Safety Programme recognizes its importance to develop more effective road safety measures and strategy and to improve knowledge about factors contributing to road crashes.

  4. Project Background • Objective: To enhance road safety policies and strategies of partners and stakeholders in Cambodia by conducting and promoting nationally and internationally-recognized research. • Partners: - National Road Safety Committee (NRSC) - Transport Research Institute (IMOB) - John Hopkins University (JHU) - Coalition for Road Safety (CRY)

Expected Results Project Background • Appropriate strategies based on research are developed for improving road safety policies and programmes • The capacity of local NGO to design and carry out road safety research is increased and road safety library is set up; • Coordination with national and international road safety research agencies is improved through the dissemination of information;

Project Background • Previous Research support • A research on sociological analysis of road safety situation in Cambodia focusing on historical, cultural and political aspects • Road safety post awareness assessment focusing on helmet prepared by an independent company (Solidus). • An assessment on drink driving carried out by HIB in conjunction with CRY. • Road safety post awareness assessment focusing on drink driving • Cost Analysis on Road Crashes in Cambodia 2009 by HIB and technical Assistant from IMOB

  7. Project Background • Current Research Support • Helmet Observation by HIB and JHU • Drink driving Observation by traffic police, HIB, and JHU • Research on Speeding • Road site survey by HIB and JHU • Research on Vehicle Kilometer

  8. Project Background • Future Research Support • Study on Vulnerable Road User • study on linkage between disability and road crash • Household survey regarding helmet using and drink driving

Key Success • Appropriate strategies based on research are developed for the improvement of road safety activities; • The capacity of HIB staff and local NGO to design and carry out road safety research has increased; • Coordination with national and international road safety research agencies has improved through the dissemination of information (WHO, CRY, NRSC, MOI, MOH…);

  10. Challenges/Difficulties • Limited human resource in road safety research (lack of skill and document)

  11. Lesson Learnt • Technical assistance from specific research institute helps implement and increase knowledge in road safety research;

  12. Conclusion/Recommendation • Collaborate with specific research institute (IMOB) and local NGO will make the project successful; • Provide more trainings on Road Safety and research methodology will increase the capacity to carry out research project;
