  1. PLANT MAINTENANCE AND SAFETY(341903) Name:Akshay J Gheewala. Branch: Mechanical Topic: Types of Friction Class & Batch: 1042-A En No. : 106470319052

  2. WHAT IS IT ? • A force that oppose motion. • What does oppose mean??? • Oppose means…….goes against.

  3. Friction makes it possible: • To walk • Use wheeled vehicles • Sit • Hold books

  4. HOW PRDUCE FRICTION ? • Friction is a force that occurs when 2 surfaces oppose each other.

  5. Rub your hands together to produce friction.

  6. Types of friction • Static • Sliding • Rolling • Fluid

  7. Static Friction • Friction that acts on something that is not moving • Piano is held in place by static friction • Static friction keeps you in your seat • No heat or wear is generated

  8. Sliding Friction • Force resulting when pushing or pulling an object over a surface. • Moving day—pushing a box across the floor • Heat and wear can result

  9. A force that acts againstan object which slider overa surface- Sliding friction is alwaysless than static friction PUSH FRICTION

  10. That means that • is always • easier to keep • an object • moving than to • Start an object • moving

  11. Rolling FRICTION • Contact is reduced because of rollers or wheels or ball bearings. • Skate boards have ball bearings in the wheels. • A cart has wheels. • Less heat and wear will result.

  12. • The Force that Act on Rolling Objects • Use ball bearings and wheels • Rolling Friction replaces Sliding Friction

  13. Fluid friction • Resistance from a “liquid” or air. • Stirring a thick batter • Walking through water • Olympic bike riders

  14. • The force which acts against motion In a fluid. • Fluid is a Gas or Liquid. The faster the movement the greater the friction.

  15. Reducing friction • A smooth surface does demonstrate as much friction as a rough surface. • A lubricant can be used to reduce friction.
