  4. Session aims Learn about potential social media platforms that are available. Gain understanding of why social media might be useful. Promote connection & collaborative working. Share knowledge and requirements of social media platforms with fellow researchers.

Communication • Examples: • Blogging (Wordpress, Blogger, Posterous, ...) • Microblogging (Twitter, Tumblr, Google Buzz...) • Social Networking (Facebook, Bebo, Google+ ...) • Location based SN (Foursquare, FB places, Gowalla ..) • Events (Eventbrite, Hotlist, Meetup.com ...) • Also: Crowd Funding, Advertising, and many more

Collaboration • Examples: • Wiki’s (Wikipedia, Wikimedia, Qwiki...) • Social bookmarking (Delicious, Diigo, StumbleUpon...) • Document management (GoogleDocs, Dropbox ...) • Social News (Digg, Reddit ..) • Content Management (Wordpress, Drupal...) • Also: Navigation, Gaming, and many more

Why use social media?Advantages: • Showcase expertise & supplement press releases and traditional media. • Showcase research produced by staff / students. • You can broadcast events. • Deliver emergency notifications instantly. • Connect & interact people – have a two-way dialogue. • Reach and influence an audience directly. • Researchers, staff and public can be trained in communication techniques. • You can co-create knowledge with your audience.
