Mark Twain Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910) better known by the pen name Mark Twain, was an American humorist, satirist, writer, and lecturer. Twain is most noted for his novels Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. He is also known for his quotations.
Background The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was based on Mark Twain’s own childhood in the home - a small town of Hannibal ,saw and heard first-hand experience of the people and events. It is a literary masterpiece describing Tom’s adventure life, written in 1876 .Tom Sawyer is a mischievous young boy who lives in a small town called St. Petersburg on the Mississippi River.

Summary The fiction describes a naive life of a group of children led by Tom .They make all sorts of adventures in order to shake off the dull homework, hypocritical doctrines（虚伪的教义） and wooden living environment. 1. Tom changed punishment into happiness. 2. Tom and Huck unwillingly witnessed a murder. 3. Tom and his friends’ experiences of pirates. 4. Tom had a ranging desire to dig for hidden treasure. 5. Tom and Becky had an unusual picnic. At last Tom set up a nation of robber.
1. Tom changed punishment into happiness • One Saturday morning Tom was punished to paint the fence, but his mind was full of playing. At this dark and hopeless moment an inspiration bust upon him. He took up his brush to work as if it was a grant job and he was enjoying it. When others want to do painting, they must use their apple, kite and something like that to change for the job. At last Tom was very happy and rich while others were tired.
2. Tom and Huck unwillingly witnessed a murder • One light in order to prove that dead cats can cure a kind of disease, Tom and Huck came to a graveyard. It was there that they witnessed a murder. Injun Joe killed a person, however, later he shifted the blame onto Muff Potter. At the last minute, Tom defeated himself and stand out to clarify some facts.
3. Tom and his friends’ experiences of pirates • After the quarrel with Becky, Tom was deep in sorrow. He thought that nobody loved him, so he decided to be a pirate. Huck and Harper also participated it. Then they stole some food and left for an small island. Thus they lived a life of pirates. People in their town thought they died. One of those days Tom went back and heard that there would be a funeral and for the three children. This made Tom excited on Saturday. That day they returned, actually all the people were surprised.
4. Tom had a ranging desire to dig for hidden treasure • Tom and Huck came to a haunted house and they happened to see Joe. When Joe and his partner buried some stolen money, they found a box of gold coins. However, they carried all the money away because of suspicion. Finally, Tom and Huck overcame many difficulties and got the rich treasure.
5. Tom and Becky had an unusual picnic. • One day Tom was invited by Becky to take part in a picnic. Unfortunately, Tom and Becky lost their way in the cave. After several days separating, they were rescued on account of Tom’s brave, intelligence and persistence. During that time Tom found that Joe died in the cave and he got a bag of gold coins which belonged to Joe.
Character analysis • Tom Sawyer Tom is an active child, in his possession, which embodies wisdom , strategy, justice, and even courageous leadership can be may. He is a multiple role assembling resourceful and compassionate. He holds the attitude of resentment to reality, and tries to run out of the shackles to become a forest outlaw having an unrestrained life.
My Opinion about Tom In the novel, Tom Sawyer is full of aspiration and meets lots of trouble at the same time. In the eyes of Aunt Polly, he was a naughty boy, but she has time and again softened by his ingenuity. I think he is a lifelike figure that leaves a deep impression on the readers.
Comments • The story appears to be a children’s adventure novel, in reality it is to satirize school education and society "civilized" that destroys the soul and nature of children. Tom and Huck has fled to escape the community, precisely because they are living in the suffocation of the Cage.
