  1. RNAV(GNSS) Approach Status B. RABILLER DGAC/ DCS 27th January 2006

  2. RNAV(GNSS) Approach Status • AMC 20-XX Status • ICAO RNPSORSG Status

  3. AMC 20-XX StatusIntroduction • V 2.3b dated 27th January 06 should be the final Draft. • This draft should be reviewed soon by the EASA regulation department. • NPA EASA will be issued for public comment. • A period of approximately 9 months before publication is necessary after NPA issuance. • It is recalled that AMC 20-XX V 2.3 addresses only the lateral aspect (2D RNAV (GNSS) approach).

  4. AMC 20-XX StatusMain modifications introduced in V 2.3 (1/3) • Clarification and modification following: • OST September 05 meeting and • EASA November 05 meeting. • Take into account ICAO RNPSORSG (RNP Special Operational Requirements Study Group) outcome: • Publication of the ICAO “Performance Based Navigation Manual” mid 2006 to replace the existing “RNP manual” • 2D RNAV(GNSS) approach should be named “Basic RNP 0.3 approach” without any technical differences • Just a name change to be consistent with future ICAO terminology • Introduction of the “onboard performance monitoring and alerting” function • This function is basically supported by a RAIM or equivalent algorithm (Navigation System error monitoring) and by the lateral deviation crew monitoring (Flight technical error monitoring).

  5. AMC 20-XX StatusMain modifications introduced in V 2.3 (2/3) • Minor modification associated to document presentation (Purpose, Background and Scope sections have been rearranged) • Flight crew training section has been expanded and gives details on requested crew knowledge/crew training (chapter 10.4.3) • The training program should provide sufficient training on the aircraft’s RNAV system to the extent that the pilots are not just task oriented. • e.g. depiction of wpt types (fly over, fly by), • Crew knowledge of RNAV system specific information • e.g. levels of automation, mode annunciations • Clarify that crew training should address specific items • e.g. RNAV system initialization, fly direct to a wpt, insert and delete route discontinuity,

  6. AMC 20-XX StatusMain modifications introduced in V 2.3 (3/3) • Navigation database integrity section is modified (chapter 10.5.2) • Letter Of Authorisation (LOA) remains the basic acceptable process • but a note is added to specify that alternate method (manual verification) could be used if the equipment manufacturer and/or navigation database provider has not received yet the LOA. Appendix C (from AMC 20-XX version 2.0) is added in order to support this note. • This amendment is necessary because there is still some FMS or RNAV manufacturer without LOA Type 2. Authority have not sufficient visibility on the compliance time.

  7. ICAO RNPSORSGIntroduction • An ICAO SG (RNP and Special Operational Requirement Study Group) • Main SG objectives: • Clarification of RNAV and RNP terminology • Update of ICAO doc 9613 • Should prevent proliferation of navigation standard. • PBN (performance Based Navigation) manual will be published soon (mid 06?) and will superseded Doc 9613 • Includes two VOLs

  8. ICAO RNPSORSG - Introduction Navigation application • Area navigation (RNAV): A method of navigation which permits aircraft operation on any desired flight path • (RNAV) Operations: Aircraft operations using an area navigation (RNAV) system. RNAV operations include RNAV and RNP Applications • RNP x: A navigation specification with an on board performance monitoring and alerting function • RNAV x: A navigation specification without an on board performance monitoring and alerting function • “x” refers to the lateral navigation accuracy in Nm. Navigation specification NAVAID infrastructure Performance Based Navigation Concept

  9. Main RNPSORSG 6 Outcome Basic RNP 0.3 approach 2D RNAV(GNSS) approach On board performance monitoring and alerting function Containment integrity

  10. ICAO PBN Manual VOL I (Application of RNAV and RNP) Part A • Part A: The Performance Based Navigation concept • Chapter 1: Description of Performance based navigation • Nav specification, navaid infrastructure, nav application, RNAV and RNP designation, … • Chapter 2: Concepts of Operation • Airspace concept, strategic objectives towards operating scenarios, how CNS/ATM satisfy the airspace concept,… • For instance BRNAV (RNAV 5) is the Enroute continental navigation airspace concept in Europe. • Chapter 3: Uses of Performance Based navigation • Airspace planning (e.g. separation minima, route spacing) • Airworthiness and OPS • Flight and ATC operation

  11. ICAO PBN Manual VOL I (Application of RNAV and RNP) Part B • Part B: Implementation Guidance • Chapter 1: Implementation Processes • Implementing a nav application to support an airspace concept • Chapter 2: Identifying navigation requirements • Description of the airspace concept, assessing the CNS/ATM environment, identifying a potential nav specification. • Chapter 3: Using an existing navigation specification to satisfy an airspace concept

  12. ICAO PBN Manual VOL I (Application of RNAV and RNP) Part B • Part B: Implementation Guidance (cont’d) • Chapter 4: Development of new navigation specification to satisfy an airspace concept • State or regional feasibility assessment, coordination with ICAO, development of nav spec, safety assessment,… • Chapter 5: Implementation preparation • Validation of airspace concept, flight inspection • Procedure design, impact on ATC system, training material • Implementation and post implementation review

  13. ICAO Performance Based ManualVOL II Part A VOL II: Navigation specifications • Part A: RNAV specification • Chapter 1: RNP 10 Oceanic and Remote continental • Chapter 2: RNAV 5 Continental En route • Chapter 3: RNAV 1 and 2 Continental En route and Terminal • Chapter 4: TBD

  14. ICAO Performance Based ManualVOL II Part B VOL II: Navigation specifications • Part B: RNP specification • Chapter 1: RNP 4 Oceanic and Remote continental • Chapter 2: RNP 0.1 to 0.3 : Approach • Chapter 3: Basic RNP 0.3 : Approach (same as 2D RNAV (GNSS) approach) • Chapter 4: TBD

  15. ICAO Performance Based ManualRNAV(GNSS) approach • PBN VOL II Part B is including a Basic RNP 0.3 navigation specification. • Is equivalent to AMC 20-XX for 2D RNAV(GNSS) approach • Is harmonized with other navigation specification (e.g. RNAV 1) in terms of presentation. • Should be used by every state implementing 2D RNAV(GNSS) approach from 2007?

  16. QUESTION?

  17. Additional SlideMinor revision to AMC 20-XX V2.3 • Difference between V 2.3a and V 2.3: • Annex C (Navigation data base integrity checks) is added. • Para 10.5.2: Add at the end of the note: « An acceptable methodology is described in annex C of this AMC. » • Difference between V 2.3b and V 2.3a: • Suppress in the title « (Basic RNP 0.3 approach operation) » • Section 1 purpose : replace « …RNAV(GNSS) approach… » by «… 2D RNAV (GNSS) approach… » • In para 2.1.7 replace « ..in 2007 the RNAV(GNSS) approaches » by « ..in 2007 the 2D RNAV(GNSS) approaches »
