  2. 1940- Leon Trotsky assassinated • Assassinated on August 21,1940 • Died at 60 and was assassinated by a Stalinist Agent • Also was attempted to be assassinated on May 24,1940 at his home but survived the attack

  3. Leon Trotsky facts • Leader in the Russian Revolution in 1917 • Founder and Commander of the Red Army • Expelled from the communist party and deported from the Soviet Union • Escaped from Prison Twice

  4. 1941- Japanese Attack Pearl Harbor • Pearl Harbor was attacked on Sunday December 7th,1941 by the Japanese • The attack started at 7:53 a.m. and lasted until 9:45 a.m. • 2,335 service men and 68 civilians were killed, and 1,178 wounded

Pearl Harbor attack • On December 8th the U.S. declared war on Japan, and on December 11th Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S • This attack brought the U.S into the War • President Roosevelt called December 7, 1941 “ a date that which will live in infamy”, which was is one of the Presidents most famous quotes

  6. 1942-Harrison Ford born • Born on July 13,1942 in Chicago Illinois • Ford then later became one of the worlds most famous actors • Ford starred in some of the worlds most famous films including: The Star Wars Films which were “A New Hope”, “The Empire Strikes Back”, and “Return of the Jedi”. He also starred as Indiana Jones , and starred as the main character in “ The Fugitive”.

  7. 1942-Harrison Ford • Has won 1 Golden Globe, and 1 Oscar • Harrison Ford is currently 69 years old, and lives in New York City. Ford also maintains a 800 acre ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyoming

  8. 1943- Warsaw Ghetto Uprising • Jews at Warsaw Ghetto learned of the final plan to deport the rest of the Jews in the ghetto to the Treblinka death camp to be killed. • After learning about the Final Deportation, Mordecai Anielewicz founded the Z.O.B which means Jewish Fighting Organization • On April 19, 1943 the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising began when German Troops entered the Ghetto to deport surviving Jews • Warsaw Ghetto Jews Fought and Held out against German Troops for 27 days • On May 8th the Z.O.B headquarters was captured and on May 16th the German Troops announced that the fighting was over and The Ghetto was to be burneddown

  9. 1944-D-Day • On June 6th,1944 Americans and other allied troops landed on 5 beach heads in Normandy to start the invasion called D- Day • The success of D-Day was the Beginning of the end for the Germans • By August almost all of France had been captured and under control of the Americans and allies • Hitler was forced to fight a two-front war against the Russians on the East and the Americans, British, Canadians, and French on the West • Within a year Hitler committed suicide and the War in Germany was over

  10. 1944- D-Day facts • One of the 5 landings at Omaha Beach had one of the most difficult landings, navigation problems resulted in many men drowning before the reached the land • 9,000 allied troops were killed or wounded • 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircrafts were involved in the D-Day invasion

  11. 1945-Atomic bombs dropped • The first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6th,1945 • The bomb was dropped in order to speed up the end of World War 2, 70,000 died immediately and another 70,000 died in the next five years from the Bombs radiation • 2/3rds of Hiroshima was destroyed

  12. 1945- Atomic Bombs dropped • On August 9th, 1945 just 3 days after the Hiroshima bomb, a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki after Japan did not surrender • The Nagasaki bomb was considered to be stronger than the Hiroshima bomb but the mountainous and rough terrain caused the bomb to not do as much damage • 40% of Nagasaki was destroyed and 70,000 people died

  13. Hiroshima and Nagasaki bomb facts • The Hiroshima bomb was dropped at 8:15 a.m. and exploded 1,900 feet above the city • The Hiroshima bomb was nicknamed “little Boy” • The Nagasaki bomb was dropped at 11:02 a.m. and exploded 1,650 feet above the city

  14. 1946- Bikinis Introduced • On July 5th,1946 the bikini swimsuit was introduced by a French man named Louis Reard • The 1946 summer was the first war free summer in years and Louis Reard wanted to create a product that matched the liberated and good mood of people • It was advertised as basically a bra top and two inverted triangles of cloth connected by string • He had a hard time finding a professional model who would model his invention but then he finally came across Micheline Bernardini

  15. 1946- Bikini introduced • After the debut the bikini was a hit • The Bikini didn’t become popular in Europe until the 1950s and didn’t become popular in America until the Early 1960s • The Bikini grew more popular after Brian Hyland came out with the song “itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini” in 1960 and the popularity of the bikini still continues to grow

  16. 1947- Jackie Robinson Becomes first African American in MLB • On April 15,1947 , Jackie Robinson became the first black in the Major League baseball • He played the historic first game with the Brooklyn Dodgers • 25,000 people watched this game in person at Eobets Field in Brooklyn, New York • He played 151 games and hit 1,518 times before retiring from the MLB • Jackie Robinson died on October 24th,1972 at age 53 from heart problems

  17. Jackie Robinson awards/facts • Awarded first ever Rookie of the Year award • Named the National League’s Most Valuable Player • Lead the Dodgers into a World Series Victory in 1955 • His number “42” was retired in 1997

  18. 1948- Babe Ruth dies • In November 1946 Babe Ruth entered the hospital after suffering monstrous pain above his left eye. It was cancer and he went through surgery, but not all of the cancer was removed • The cancer later grew back and Babe Ruth died on August 16th,1948 at age 53

  19. Babe Ruth Facts • Born as George Herman Ruth Jr. on February 6th, 1895 • Won 3 world series, 2 with the Red Sox and 1 with the New York Yankees • Known as one of the greatest left handed pitchers and the greatest baseball player of all time • Inducted into the Baseball half of fame

  20. 1949- Harry Truman inaugurated as President • On January 20th 1949, Harry Truman was inaugurated as the 33rd president of the United States • Harry Truman won the election by a 4 percent difference in votes which was 49 percent to Thomas E. Devey's 45 percent • This was Harry Truman’s second term as president

  21. 1949- Harry Truman Presidency Facts • Harry Truman was best known during his Presidency for defeating Germany, being one of the founders of the United Nations, having the Marshall Plan passed, and authorizing the atomic bombs to be dropped on Japan • Truman authorized the atomic bombs to be dropped on Japan to speed up the end of World War 2 • Harry Truman died on December 26th,1972 in Kansas
