COLOSSIANS 3:15-17 • Ephesians is a sister epistle to Colossians. • 78 of the 95 verses in Col. are very similar to those in Eph. • Both written at the same time. • Both carried to the 2 churches by Onesimus a runaway slave that Paul led to faith in Christ. • They are only 100 miles apart. • Like the gospels, it is good to compare the similar accounts.

COL. 3:16 • “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

  4. EPHESIANS 5:18-20 • “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

COMPARE COL. 2:16-17 & EPH. 5:18-20 • Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. • Teach and admonish one another. • Sing psalms, hymns, & spiritual songs. • Do all in Jesus’ name. • Giving thanks to God. • Be filled with the Spirit. • Speak to one another, • With psalms, hymns, & spiritual songs. • Giving thanks to God, • For everything in Jesus’ name.

  6. “TO DWELL” • GREEK WORDS-- • OIKOS=HOUSE (noun) • OIKEO=TO INHABIT(A HOUSE) (verb) • ENOIKEO=IN, TO DWELL/TO LIVE IN A HOUSE (verb) • KATOIKEO=DOWN, TO DWELL/TO SETTLE DOWN (verb)

  7. 2 Cor. 6:16 • “For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will live with(dwell--ENOIKEO) them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.”

  8. 2 Tim. 1:14 • “Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in (dwells-ENOIKEO) us.”

  9. EPHESIANS 3:16-17 • “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in(KATOIKEO-settle down in) your hearts through faith.”

  10. MacArthur Study Bible note • “…Scripture should permeate every aspect of the believer’s life and control every thought, word, and deed. This concept is parallel to being filled with the Spirit in Eph. 5:18, the power and motivation for all the effects is the filling of the Holy Spirit; here it is the word richly dwelling. Those two realities are really one. The Holy Spirit fills the life controlled by his word. This emphasizes that the filling of the Spirit is not some ecstatic or emotional experience, but a steady controlling of the life by obedience to the truth of God’s word.”

  11. CONCLUSION • The 2 passages may betelling us much the same thing. • To be filled with the Holy Spirit is similar/parallel to letting the word of Christ dwell in you richly. • Both are commands. • Both result in the same effects.
