  2. Objectives • The participant will: • Be able to map their community • Learn the interpersonal skills required for building a rapport in their service area • Develop an action plan for building a rapport within their service area

  3. The Balm In Gilead • The Balm In Gilead is a not-for-profit, not governmental organization whose mission is to improve the health status of people of the African Diaspora by building the capacity of faith communities to address life-threatening diseases, especially HIV/AIDS.

  4. Five Core Elements • Create Awareness • Engagement • Capacity Development • Community Mobilization • Advocacy

  5. Community-Driven Approach • “Poor and marginalized people have often been viewed as the target of poverty reduction efforts. Community Driven Development (CDD) approaches turn this perception on its head, and treat poor people and their institutions as assets and partners in the search for sustainable solutions to development challenges” The World Bank

  6. Community Mapping • Builds a healthy community from within • Type of Community Assessment • Visual narrative that tells the story of a neighborhood • Builds on strengths of the community • Shared Process • Promotes relationship building • Promotes the development of shared goals

  7. Outcomes • Highlights a neighborhood’s assets • Analyzes changes in the neighborhood • Identifies strengths, supports, and opportunities • Identifies gaps

  12. Approach • Earn the right to speak and recommend • Active Listener • Do your homework • Clear agenda, but a open-minded • Know yourself • Nonjudgmental • Promote Your Credibility

  13. The Individual • Who is the person • Honor their personhood (not a number, outcome, high-risk group) • Temperament (ex. DISC) • Task -oriented : too friendly is annoying • People-oriented: Not friendly enough is a turn off • What are their interests • Listen: Can a brown paper bag talk to you?

  14. Your message • Listen and be curious • Clarity • Denominations (30 sec, 60 sec, 1 min, 8 hrs) • You are the message • Body Language • Consistency

  15. The Dance • Dancing in synch • Matching and Mirroring • Listen with your body • Tone of voice • Breathing • Energy levels • Body gestures • Avoiding mocking • Pacing the lead
