  1. March 3, 2014 • When you arrive… • Get out your character analysis to be turned in. • Get out your writer’s notebook and begin completing the following entry. The American Dream “What is the American dream? What do you think the author’s message is about it? Do you still believe the American Dream exists? Has it changed? Are you pursuing the American Dream?”

Today we are… • Completing Writer’s Notebook entry #3 • Taking a quiz over chapter 3 • Continuing our analysis of The Great Gatsby by looking at symbolism • Reading Chapter 4 • When you leave you should be able to… • Identify and discuss symbolism in The Great Gatsby • Discuss how analysis of a book in English is a SKILL that transfers to other areas • Homework • Use Quizlet to study vocabulary – YES, we will have a quiz next class • Finish Chapter 4 (Be sure you’re keeping your bookmark up to date) • Make sure all assignments are completed and turned in • Benchmark (If you haven’t finished, you need to attend tutorials) • Webquest • Character Analysis • Re-take questions to fix quiz grades

  3. Symbolism – How is analyzing a book a useful skill in other areas? • Divide your paper into 8 boxes • Put each of the following items into a box on the left. Leave room to draw a visual representation of each. East Egg v. West Egg, Eyes, Valley of Ashes, Green Light • Work with your group to find and discuss any descriptions of these in your book. Thoroughly fill in the right side with ideas from your discussion. • Choose one of the four squares and write a thorough analysis on the back.

  4. Analytical Paragraph Reminders • Begin with a topic sentence (a subject and an opinion). What is the deeper meaning of your item? • Follow this with evidence from the book that is embedded in a sentence and properly cited. • Then spend 2-3 sentences analyzing the deeper meaning. • Conclude the paragraph with a profound statement, a prediction, or a connection to current times.
