What is it? • Atherosclerosis is a slow complex disease that typically starts during childhood and often accumulates when people grow older. • The hardening and narrowing of the artery. • In some people it advances rapidly even in older decades. • Scientist think that in begins with damage to the innermost layer of the artery called “Endothelium”

  3. What are the signs &nd Symptoms • There are usually not any signs or symptoms until middle or older age. • When the narrowing of the artery becomes severe the blood flow is blocked and can cause pain. Blockage can rupture causing blood clots.

  5. Who Gets it? • This disease can affect people of any age but it usually does not threat until people reach their forties or fifties.

  6. Ways To Prevent It and Treat it! • Control your weight • Healthy diet( low fat) • Regular physical activity • Low salt diet • No Smoking or quit smoking • Control stress • Bypass Surgery

  7. How It Is Diagnosed! • Cardiac stress testing • CT Scan • Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS)

  8. What is the Prognosis? • Number one cause of death in the United States • People with atherosclerosis are living longer with better quality of life than ever before • Can be prevented
