  2. The Renaissance- The South • Began in Italy in the 14th Century • A period of intense creativity (art and science) • Most popular artists from the Renaissance: • Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci • Scientists expanded natural science

Society • Towns had grown tremendously since medieval time • Towns in southern Europe had great influence • Wealthy people lived in towns • The people living in towns had more leisure time and money than medieval times. • The spent most their time studying new ideas. • Had money to explore the arts.

  4. Art Medieval Times Renaissance • View of world pessimistic • Life is full of suffering • Art had a religious theme • Artists created paintings to teach about faith • Saw medieval as stanate (sluggish, inactive) • Focused on Greek and Roman artists • Art (sculpture) was to celebrate human form • Optimistic view of life (there was room for improvement)

  5. South vs North Renaissance • South was the first to change from the medieval times. • The North came after cities began prospering • They are mostly different but share one key focus: A DEEP SEATED FAITH IN HUMAN EFFORT

ITALY • The Renaissance started in Italy, but why? • Italy was the heartland of the Roman Empire • Italy still used Roman law • There was a clear legal code that made business easier • There were Roman ruins, sculptures, mosaics and paintings that inspired Italian artists (their ancestors created them)

Geography was the main reason for Italy being the starting point of the Renaissance: • Italy had a collection of independent city-states • Large, powerful cities were developed because of trade (Venice & Genoa) • Mountains made trade routes very prosperous • The weather was milder (could travel in winter, food was plentiful) • Italy had close ties to the Muslim world to the South and East.

  8. The Muslims introduced Italy to science, medicine, and astronomy. • The Muslims also introduced oranges, lemons, coffee and sugar. • Italy was near the rich port cities of Africa and the Middle East, which brought more money into Italy • More money= more time for arts to succeed.

Questions • Please read page 210 (geography section) and answer the following: • What do mountains do? • What two cities in Italy grew because of nearby mountains? • Why was Florence so successful? • Study the map of Italy and be able to identify the following: • Siena, Rome, Venice, Sicily, Corsica, Florence, Milan, Apennines mountain range
