Journal #1 Raymond’s Run • Journal Entry – Sept. 8, 2009 • “Raymond’s Run” is about a girl named Squeaky who has responsibility for her mentally disabled older brother Raymond. Imagine yourself in a similar situation. What might your relationship with your brother be like? How would you handle the responsibility for caring for him? If, in fact, you have a disabled family member, describe your relationship with him or her.

Conflict • A struggle between two opposing forces or characters. • There can be more than one conflict in a story. • There are Two categories of Conflict…
External Conflict • A problem that occurs to the character from some outside force. • Conflict can be Character vs. Character or Character vs. Nature
Internal Conflict • A conflict that occurs within the character’s own mind. • An internal conflict occurs when you are trying to make a difficult decision.
Complications • Moments in the RISING ACTION of the story that have an impact on the central conflict. • Complications are things that get in the way of the main character’s ability to solve the central conflict. • Complications build TENSION in the story.
Central Conflict • The Central Conflict is the main conflict in the story that involves the main characters. • The central conflict is resolved in the RESOLUTION of the plot.
