  2. CM413 Soil Mechanics Course Lecturer:  Prof.Dr. Hassan AbdEllatifCourse Assistant: Eng: ShimaaCourse Objectives: The objective of this course is to enable students to:To enable students to:* Identify different soil problems.* Identify Stresses and displacement in soil mass as elastic body - Stress due to different load (point load & uniformly loaded area).* Identify Consolidation of Soil, Shear Strength of soil , Bearing Capacity of shallow foundation. * Design Shallow foundation (defined and types ) & Foundation construction. * Identify Earth pressures & design Retaining walls.* design Sheet - Piles walls - Cantilevered & anchored.* Check Stability of earth fills – Dams.

  3. Course Description: Stresses and displacement in soil mass as elastic body - Stress due to different load (point load & uniformly loaded area) - Consolidation of Soil, Shear Strength of soil , Bearing Capacity of shallow foundation - Compressibility, consolidation and settlement. Introduction to lateral earth pressure and slope stability, piles ,foundations ,sheet piles.Recommended text books:Muni Budhu, "Soil Mechanics and Foundations," 2nd Edition, Wiley, 2006.References:1- David McCarthy, "Essentials of Soil Mechanics and Foundations: Basic Geotechninics," 7thed, Prentice Hall, 2006.2- Braja M.
