Some aspects that illustrate conceptual differences of energy systems… Socio-economics: Coal and uranium mining is often harmful to the local workers Nuclear Power is linked to political power, proliferation and terrorism Economical power of individuals: There are owners of oil fields and coal mines that make enormous profit and have almost unlimited influence in the area. Fossil energy can be stored and sold on the world market at any time - or it can be saved for later Economical potential of large areas: There is an abundance of suitable areas for renewable energy. Nobody owns wind and solar resources and nobody can exhaust them. There is no need to save them for later. Wind- and solar farming is always decentralised. Electrical power cannot be saved for later.An African-European power network is a win-win situation. A boycott causes immediate financial losses on both sides. Thoughts for the DESERTEC Research Institute A think tank for finding the optimum roadmap to solve the world energy problem at the required speed and in a stable way A platform for linking natural sciences and humanities to discuss the development and implementation of renewable energy concepts A forum to exchange ideas and to identify the vital questions or problems concerning the future energy system A host that helps to form international collaborations between research groups or research institutes that can solve the above questions

DISEM and the activities at the DESERTEC-FOUNDATION • There is an immense need to get things going – and to get them going fast • There are many ways to go – we should discuss and find the best options • DISEM could be “stand-alone” or in some relation to other academic activities of DESERTEC or a “seed” of the DESERTEC Research Institute, or even more…
