There are five (5) steps in the Youth Basic Firearms Safety Training program. • Step 1 - classroom training only - covers basic safety, parts, operation, ammunition and shooting fundamentals. • Step 2 - classroom and range time – focus on airsoft firearms only. Firearms safety and operation. • Step 3 – range time – demonstrate knowledge learned in Step 1 and Step 2. Airsoft firearms only shooting scenarios • Step 4 – Classroom and range time – introduction to real firearms. Live fire under the direction of an LSSA safety officer. • Step 5 – range time – youth will participate in a LSSA shooting match. • Students must pass a test at each step to advance.

STEP 1 Introduction to Pistol Safety, Parts, and Operation • These are some of the goals that you will attain by taking this class. • You will learn the basics of firearm safety. • The truth about firearms and firearm ownership • How to use and properly care for a firearm • Learn sportsmanship

  4. STEP 1 Introduction to Pistol Safety, Parts, and Operation • Requirements to attend this class • Minimum age is 12 years. Student must demonstrate maturity in order to take this class • Students shall be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and be under the supervision of an LSSA safety officer at all times during range exercises.

STEP 1 Introduction to Pistol Safety, Parts, and Operation • Four cardinal rules of firearm safety • Treat all firearms as if they’re loaded all the time • Never point a firearm at anything you don’t intend to destroy • Be sure of your target and what is beyond it • Keep your finger off the trigger until your sites are on the target

STEP 1 Introduction to Pistol Safety, Parts, and Operation • Additional firearm safety rules • Be sure the barrel and action are clear of obstacles • Unloaded firearm when not in use • Never climate fence or tree, or jump a ditch or log, with a loaded firearm • Never shoot at a flat, or hard surface or at water • Store firearms and ammunition separately • Avoid the use of alcohol and certain medications before or during shooting activities

  20. STEP 1 Introduction to Shooting Fundamentals • Trigger Squeeze • Position of index finger • Smooth, continuous pull • Each shot should come as a surprise • Maintain sight alignment • Follow-through • Prevents unnecessary movement

  21. STEP 1 Introduction to Shooting • This completes Step1 of the LSSA Youth Shooting Program. Congratulations for completing this course of instruction. • Step 2 will build on the fundamentals learned in Step 1. This step will include range time with airsoft guns to put these fundamentals into action.
