Case – Leo Pharma • Leo Pharma, a pharmaceutical plant in Ballerup • Established 1948 – still developint / growth • 1400 jobs, > 25 different buildings • 120.000 m3 waste water / year • 5 major sites with very poluted waste water • Intense use of technics and hazardius chemicals • Environmental approvement (part 5) in 1995 • Special waste water approval since (part 4) in 1988

Chemical zyntese - headlines • 17 productions ≈ 74 m3 pr. day • - 4 productions  production stop • 13 productions was given chemical survey • - 3 productions  chemical waste • 10 productions was given waste water approval • - 1 production missed ecotox  chemical waste • 9 productions was critical ABC-evaluated • - 2 productions  production stop • 7 productions was given new ABC – lab. Tests • - 2 productions  production stop • ONLY 5 of 17 productions was given w.w. permit

  5. Main topics in daily control • Cleaner technology ≈ BAT • Hazardious chemicals  special treatment • Other reduction of waste water volume • Reducing waste water inhibitation • Reducing specific chemicals

Starting survey • At the fence or inside the factory? • Descriebe main production facillities • Look at all production lines • Look at all machinery and pipelines etc. • Look at all operating units • Look at all chemicals used in the produktion kg/hour • Look at all chemical emission to air, water, ground and product • Look at alle activities to reduce waste.

  7. Back in the office • Focus on processes where there are emission or waste • Focus on detected major use of hazardius chemicals • Classified the chemicals in use • In Denmark we use: • A class chemicals: Not alloved in waste water • B class chemicals: Limited emission to waste vater • C class chemicals: Degradebel in recipient. • This classification is based on fx. Toxicologi or degradability

  8. Regulations in a waste water permit There will normaly be demands to: • Limit to the volume • Some technical demands • Chemical limitations to specific chemicals • Self-messurament and analyses • Statistical acceptence • Report and data-presentation
