  1. Today’s Passage: Luke 3:10-20 (Please read if you have not done so) “There’s a fly in my locust and honey.”

  2. John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.” (Luke 3:7-9) 3:10 - 20 JHK

(v 11) John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.” (Luke 3:11) When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” (Acts 2:37) 3:10 - 20 JHK

The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people - robbers, evildoers, adulterers - or even like this tax collector.   16. Counterfeit Repentance “A man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ But they all began to make excuses. ‘I just bought a field and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’ ‘I just bought five yoke of oxen and I’m on my way to try them out.’ ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’” (Luke 14:16-20) 3:10 - 20 JHK

  17. “The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah.” (Luke 3:15) “Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, ‘I am not the Christ.’” (John 1:15-16) 3:10 - 20 JHK

He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” (Luke 3:16) Jesus will baptize everyone!   21. What is baptism with the Holy Spirit? “I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.” (Ezekiel 36:25-27) “You, however, are not controlled by the flesh but by the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.” (Romans 8:9) JHK

  22. What is baptism with the Holy Spirit? “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” (Matthew 3:11) ἐνἅγιος πνεῦμα (en hagios pneuma) “with the Spirit” or “in the Spirit” JHK

What is baptism with the Holy Spirit? “Jesus stood and said…‘Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.’ By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.” (John 7:37-39) “For we were all baptized with one Spirit into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free, and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.” (I Corinthians 12:13) To receive the Spirit is to be baptized in (or “with” the Spirit and is also to drink the living water (Holy Spirit). The three phrases are synonymous. JHK

What is baptism with the Holy Spirit? “He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.” (Galatians 3:14) “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit…” (Ephesians 1:13) JHK

  26. “The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew 13:41-42)

At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.   32. “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven...The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice…He must become greater; I must become less. The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth…For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit. The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.” (John 3:27-36) JHK
