And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9. Counterfeit Repentance 1) Religious Repentance. “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people - robbers, evildoers, adulterers - or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’” (Luke 18:10-12) 3:10 - 20 JHK

  10. Counterfeit Repentance 1) Religious Repentance. 2) Pagan Repentance. Pharaoh quickly summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you. Now forgive my sin once more and pray to the Lord your God to take this deadly plague away from me.” (Exodus 10:16-17) 3:10 - 20 JHK

  11. Counterfeit Repentance 1) Religious Repentance. 2) Pagan Repentance. 3) Worldly Sorrow. “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.” (II Corinthians 7:10) 3:10 - 20 JHK

  14. Counterfeit Repentance “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices…but neglect the more important matters of the law - justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter without neglecting the former.” (Matthew 23:23) 1) Religious Repentance. 2) Pagan Repentance. 3) Worldly Sorrow. 4) Mere Confession. 5) Blame Shifting. 6) Minimizing. 3:10 - 20 JHK

  15. Counterfeit Repentance 1) Religious Repentance. 2) Pagan Repentance. 3) Worldly Sorrow. 4) Mere Confession. 5) Blame Shifting. 6) Minimizing. 7) Excuse Making. • “I’m only human.” • “Everyone else does it.” • “God can’t expect perfection.” • “Nobody got hurt.” • “I’m still a good person.” • “The devil made me do it.” • (Insert your fallback excuse) 3:10 - 20 JHK

  16. Counterfeit Repentance “A man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ But they all began to make excuses. ‘I just bought a field and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’ ‘I just bought five yoke of oxen and I’m on my way to try them out.’ ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’” (Luke 14:16-20) 3:10 - 20 JHK

  17. “The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah.” (Luke 3:15) “Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, ‘I am not the Christ.’” (John 1:15-16) 3:10 - 20 JHK

  18. “The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah.” (Luke 3:15) 1) John was completely unworthy of the Christ. 2) Christ’s ministry is greater (typified by baptism). 3) Only Jesus is able to judge the world. 3:10 - 20 JHK

  19. “John answered them, ‘I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” (Luke 3:16) “After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.” (John 13:5) 1) Unworthy (v. 16) 3:10 - 20 JHK

He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” (Luke 3:16) Jesus will baptize everyone! It will be with either… the Holy Spiritorfire. 1) Unworthy (v. 16) 2) Ministry (Baptism) (v. 16) 3:10 - 20 JHK

  21. What is baptism with the Holy Spirit? “I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.” (Ezekiel 36:25-27) “You, however, are not controlled by the flesh but by the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.” (Romans 8:9) JHK

  22. What is baptism with the Holy Spirit? “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” (Matthew 3:11) ἐνἅγιος πνεῦμα (en hagios pneuma) “with the Spirit” or “in the Spirit” JHK

  23. What is baptism with the Holy Spirit? “Jesus stood and said…‘Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.’ By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.” (John 7:37-39) “For we were all baptized with one Spirit into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free, and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.” (I Corinthians 12:13) To receive the Spirit is to be baptized in (or “with” the Spirit and is also to drink the living water (Holy Spirit). The three phrases are synonymous. JHK

  24. What is baptism with the Holy Spirit? “He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.” (Galatians 3:14) “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit…” (Ephesians 1:13) JHK

  25. “His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn the chaff with unquenchable fire.’” (Luke 3:17) Those not baptized with the Holy Spirit will be burned up in the final judgment. 1) Unworthy (v. 16) 2) Ministry (Baptism) (v. 16) 3) Judgment (v. 17) 3:10 - 20 JHK

  26. “The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew 13:41-42)

  27. Are you Wheat or Chaff? “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21) 3:10 - 20 JHK

  28. “But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife…” (Luke 3:19a) “Herodias was married to Philip, son of Herod the Great…They had a daughter Salome, after whose birth Herodias, taking it into her head to flout the way of our fathers, married Herod (Antipas), tetrarch of Galilee, her husband’s brother by the same father; to do this she parted from a living husband.” ---Flavius Josephus, Antiquities of the Jews, 18.5.3 3:10 - 20 JHK

  29. “… and all the other evil things he had done, Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.” (Luke 3:20) 3:10 - 20 JHK

  30. “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.” (Matthew 24:9-13) 3:10 - 20 JHK

  31. “Herod had John called the baptist (the dipper) killed, although he was a good man who urged the Jews to exert themselves to virtue…and having done so join together in washing (immersion in water)…when others massed about him, for they were greatly moved by his words, Herod feared that such strong influence over the people might carry to a revolt… Herod believed it better to move now than later have it raise a rebellion…so John was sent in chains to Machaerus, and put to death.” ---Flavius Josephus, Antiquities of the Jews, 18.5.2 3:10 - 20 JHK

  32. “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven...The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice…He must become greater; I must become less. The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth…For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit. The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.” (John 3:27-36) JHK
