  1. A Typical Day in Kindergarten Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School Spanish Immersion Program Sra. Rachel Rivera

  2. Good Morning! The children arrive at school by bus or car and get themselves ready for the day. Allowing the children to do things by themselves encourages their independence and gives them a sense of pride.

  3. Morning Routine Having a consistent arrival-time routine helps the children transition from home to classroom. * We always take a bathroom break and wash hands when we first get to school

  4. Morning Meeting We start each day with a greeting, share, activity and reading a morning message. We talk about the calendar, days of the week, months of the year, and the weather.

  5. Phonics This is a time we share the marker, tap out sounds, and learn how letters combine to make syllables and words. *Recess 9:00-9:20

  6. Workboard/ Literacy Centers Workboard/literacy centers provides meaningful reading and writing experiences as students work to apply skills and strategies learned during shared and guided reading lessons. Typical workboard/literacy center jobs may be the ABC, writing, listening, poetry, science, and reading around the room.

  7. Guided Reading During guided reading, teachers work with students to guide them in using their emerging reading strategies. By using books that gradually increase in difficulty, students work at their own levels and feel very successful! The end goal is for students to become confident, proficient readers who LOVE to read!

  8. Snack/Lunch Lunch Recess: 11:00-11:25 Lunch: 11:25-11:45 Morning snack @9:30 *No allergies this year I have cups to hand out snacks, they do not need to be individually wrapped.

  9. Shared Reading During shared reading, the teacher and children read big books and poems.

  10. Writing Workshop Children have a lot to say about the world and they can express themselves on paper through inventive spelling and drawing. ( we will use Handwriting without tears). Writing Workshop builds on the children’s strengths, provides meaningful, structured opportunities to write, exposes them to beautiful literature and actively teaches the skills and strategies that writers need.

  11. Science and Social Studies Kindergartners explore and discover the things and people around them and make connections between their own personal lives and the larger world around them. In science some of the the things we study are, ladybugs, bulbs, the engineering of blocks, sand and water. Our social studies units are, seasons, All about Me, families, and important people, dates, and holidays throughout the year.

  12. Recess We have PM recess everyday from 1:20-1:40

  13. Math Kindergartners participate in the Investigation programs. The children do many hands-on activities involving counting, numeration, measurement, geometry, sorting, adding subtracting and data collecting.

  14. Technology Kindergartners will be given the chance to explore and use IPads for different projects – creating and writing stories and making thinking visible in math. http://nspt4kids.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/child-with-ipad.jpg

  15. Parent and Teacher Communication Parent/Teacher Conferences can be scheduled with your child’s classroom teacher. Daily Folder Students will have a binder in their backpack for parent/teacher communication. Thursday Folders will be sent home every Thursday, it is a school wide system, all parents know to look for the folder weekly. Parents review the folder, keep the contents and then send the folder back.

  16. How do I get home? Please keep your child’s teacher informed about the way your child will be getting home from school. Make sure on contact information is kept up to date. Parents must send a note in order for the child to be sent home another way. Please be on time to pick up your child from school. Walker Day Care Bus Rider
