  4. Reading Reading How we can save the world! Weird Or Interesting? Eco-friendly Resorts Do you enjoy spending your time in the middle of nature? Have you ever heard about or perhaps chose to go to an eco-resort? You may discover that eco-resorts are the best choice one can make to relax . These resorts will surprise you as they offer exceptional services for their visitors. Relaxation and environmental awareness, some of these resorts may seem pretty weird to you yet they are amazing works of man’s imagination. 1. ( ) Whenever you may decide to visit Sweden, you should look for this accommodation. Despite the fact that it is considered to be one of Sweden’s most primitive hotels, you may find the time spent there quite pleasant. If you enjoy living in the wild and being involved in what many consider to be an adventure then such an eco-lodge is just the perfect place for you to spend one or more nights. Each of these lodges has two beds and a cozy wood heater. You may like it there and join the local community in their endeavours to protect the local moose, wolf and lynx population. What can be wrong in spending more time in nature? A. Ice Hotel 2. ( ) If you feel like spending some time in a natural landscape that remained unspoiled by man’s reckless actions and live what many consider to be an unforgettable experience then these resorts are just the perfect choice for you. They are to be found in the middle of the Switzerland’s Alps and as such they place at your feet an incredible mountainous landscape. Some say that these eco-lodges combine together the aesthetic, the comfort and at the same time preserve the amazing environment. If you get there you will be able to see five dome shaped eco-pods perched atop wooden platforms. They will most certainly attract your attention and the landscape will leave you “bouche bee” as the French say. B. Lapa Rios 3

  5. Reading Reading 3. ( ) Do you enjoy ice in your drinks? Whenever temperatures go high some of us certainly do like drinking cold drinks. What about finding accommodation in one unique hotel made of ice? You most surely heard about this hotel as it is what many consider to be the largest hotel made of ice and snow. Located in Sweden, it gives one the possibility to see how it is to spend a night or more nights in an icy atmosphere with ice furniture. You may choose to stay in warm or cold accommodations, the last ones being equipped with an ice beds and thermal sleeping bag as well. I consider this a unique eco-friendly experience. C. Paperbark camp 4. ( ) How about tents? Does the idea of living in a tent sound interesting or appealing to you? They should when it comes to this resort as the tents here are far away from the idea we used to have on camping. The only difference between this Camp and a five star hotel is that the rooms here are ventilated with CO2 instead of air conditioning. If you find innovations interesting then you will be enchanted to hear that a local animal will greet you when getting to your rooms and in order to be able to get there you will have to climb a ladder instead of taking a lift. All these tents are meant to be integrated perfectly in the natural landscape bringing no harm to this one. This is why there are high chances for you to come across kangaroos there as this is their natural habitat. Preoccupied by the idea to protect the environment these tents get energy from solar power. D. Whitepod eco-lodge 5. ( ) Does Costa Rica tell you anything? It is there that you will be able to find unique bungalows in a private nature reserve. A breathtaking landscape will surely convince you that this place is what some may consider being heaven on earth. Surrounded by tropical rainforest and just a few steps away from the shores of the tropical Pacific Ocean you will never want to leave this place. How does the idea of living in bungalows with woven palm-thatched roofs and hand-made bamboo furniture sound to you? Just imagine how it would be to wake up one morning in the middle of the rainforest vegetation and feel like perched there. E. Kolarbyn eco-lodge 4

  8. Speaking Speaking How we can save the world! Pros The hybrid vehicle has a number of advantages, which make it a great choice for new car buyers. With rising gas prices and larger holes in our Earth’s ozone layer, it makes sense to try to find something more economical and environmentally friendly. The hybrid vehicle accomplishes both. Fuel Savings The most apparent benefit of the hybrid vehicle is its fuel-efficient operation. Sure, you still have to make your visits to the gas station, but the advantage is that you will do so less often. Because of the hybrid vehicle’s electric motor, the energy your hybrid produces is much cleaner. In addition, your hybrid will automatically shut off the gasoline engine during stops or when your car is idling. That is why these cars are so quiet when you park or are at a stoplight! The electric motor kicks in and saves some fuel from being used. Therefore, if you commute to work or are in traffic quite a bit, this feature will help save some money on gasoline. Environmental Impact Fossil fuels are one of the biggest causes of pollution on Earth. Each car manufactured and travelling on the roads contributes to global warning. The air we breathe is tainted with toxic discharges from gas-powered cars and trucks. With the hybrid vehicle, those emissions are greatly reduced which in turn means less pollution. This is because of the fuel efficiency of the hybrid, which means less gas is burned up. Think about it – just sitting in traffic, you will notice a faint haze around all the cars and if you roll down your window, you will smell the stench of tailpipe exhaust. With a hybrid, while idling, your gasoline engine powers off and the electric motor kicks in. which means that you are contributing less pollution. The Pros and Cons of Hybrid Vehicles 1. Think Let’s think about how we can save the energy? • 2. Discuss • Read the article “The Pros and Cons of Hybrid Vehicles” • and talk to a partner. • If you are new car buyer, which car will you buy, Hybrid or other? 7

  9. Speaking Speaking Cons • A hybrid vehicle has many negative attributes despite being advertised as he car of the future and environmentally friendly. This list describes the failings of the hybrid car and the supporters possible arguments against them. • Hybrid vehicles cost a lot more, but do the same job. While hybrid vehicles may be slightly better for the environment, they cost a considerable amount more than normal vehicles. The fact is, hybrid vehicles run just as well as all other vehicles and do exactly the same job. They just cost more. Anyone wanting to save money would be silly to buy a hybrid car - all other cars work just as well. • Hybrid cars still burn gasoline and emit greenhouse gases • Hybrid cars still rely on gasoline as their primary form of propulsion. They have an electric motor (in addition to a gasoline engine), but this can only draw power, in various ways, from the gasoline engine. The hybrid only adds efficiency to the gasoline engine, instead of replacing it entirely. The hybrid car remains, therefore, a major emitter of greenhouse gases and a contributor to global warming. While it may contribute less to global warming, it still contributes significantly. If hybrids continue to be built in the coming decades, they will continue to contribute substantial to global warming into the middle of the century. This is unacceptable. At a time when we must respond decisively to global warming, investing in cars that continue to contribute negatively to global warming is the wrong course of action, particularly when 0-emission alternatives are available. 3. Debate Divide group into two. One of the groups supports using hybrid cars to save energy and the other disagree with. Debate each other 8
