  3. Ways to approach the self-portrait • Time: 15 min. (each) • Do continuous-line blind contour drawings • Try to represent the weight of the face; don’t worry about capturing detail, just the mass of the forms. 4. Drawing self-portrait • Time: 60 min. 1) Decide which media you will use, how you want to position yourself on paper, do a quick sketch, draw outlines, lightly, of your major features; e.g., face shape, shape of the hair, and eyes/nose. • Consider facial proportions as you draw. • Do not cut off your head; draw some of neck and shoulders, even loosely. David Hockney, Study for 'Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy' (1970)

  5. Drawing self-portrait • Time: 60 min. • Add shadows, use your fingers or a smearing tool to smear, and the eraser to remove. (Make sure you keep one consistent light source throughout.) 3) For the hair, you should first draw it as a mass, and then add details such as shadows, highlights, and texture later . Adrian Piper (1981), Self-Portrait Exaggerating My Negroid Features

  6. Drawing self-portrait • Time: 60 min. 4) Add details and individual characteristics, e.g., highlights, finer textures, and lines to give more character. George Richmond, Self-portrait (c1830)
