  2. RADICAL LIVING Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount – Matthew 5-7

  3. To Tell the Truth • The Origin of Lying  8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?” 10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” 11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” 12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” Genesis 3:8-12 RADICAL LIVING Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount – Matthew 5-7

  4. To Tell the Truth • The Origin of Lying  1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” 4 “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Genesis 3:1-6 RADICAL LIVING Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount – Matthew 5-7

  5. To Tell the Truth • The Origin of Lying  44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. John 8:44 RADICAL LIVING Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount – Matthew 5-7

  6. To Tell the Truth • God’s Opinion of Lying  16 There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, 19 a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers. Proverbs 6:19-19 RADICAL LIVING Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount – Matthew 5-7

  7. To Tell the Truth 33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.’ 34 But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. Matthew 5:33-37 RADICAL LIVING Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount – Matthew 5-7

  8. To Tell the Truth • The Religion of the Pharisees 34 But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 18. To Tell the Truth • Four Areas We Need to Be Truthful • Honest With One Another   3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God.” Acts 5:3-4 RADICAL LIVING Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount – Matthew 5-7

  21. Lying is related to intelligence: Smarter kids make better liars. • Ninety-eight percent of teens believe lying is wrong, but the same percent admit lying to their parents. • When teens argue with parents about their wishes, it's often a positive alternative (relatively speaking) to the frequent first choice – just going behind their parents' backs. • Knowing that there are consequences motivates children not to lie less, but to not get caught. • An appeal to honesty is far more effective than the threat of punishment in getting children not to lie. 28. Taking It Home Commit to telling “the whole truth and nothing but the truth.” Make yourself accountable to someone. Think about the consequences of lying. Confess when you lie and apologize.  16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.
