  1. Status of Exceptional Events

  2. Current Policies for Exceptional Events and Natural Events • 1996 PM-10 Natural Events Policy • 1986 Exceptional Events Policy • 1998 Interim Air Quality Policy on Wildland and Prescribed Fires

  3. Current Polices on Exceptional Events and Natural Events Continued • The Exceptional Events Policy covers both Exceptional Events and Natural Events issues for all of the criteria pollutants. There is one exception: • The PM-10 Natural Events Policy covers Wild fires, high wind events, and emissions from volcanic and seismic activities for PM-10.

  4. Current Polices on Exceptional Events and Natural Events Continued • Wildland and Prescribed Fires issues are covered under the 1998 Interim Wildland and Prescribed Fire Policy. • Natural Events issues for PM-2.5 will be handled on an interim basis under the PM-10 Natural Events Policy. • 8-hour Ozone issues related to fire and natural events issues will be handled under the Exceptional Events Policy the same as the 1 hour Ozone NAAQS.

  5. Next Steps on Exceptional Events and Natural Events Policies • OAQPS plans to review the need to update the Exceptional Events and Natural Events Policies. • At present, we are just in the beginning stages of reviewing the need to revise the policies. • We encourage States to continue to follow the current policies.
