  3. Types of Questions • Look at the types of questions you wrote about the Coke experiment. • Do you think they are simple questions with one answer? • Or are they questions that may have multiple correct answers?

  4. Level 1 • Level 1 type questions are used to gather basic input. • They typically can not be broken into simpler questions.

  5. Common Level 1 Words • Count • Define • Describe • Discuss • Explain • Find • Interpret • List • Locate • Observe • Outline • Recite • Relate • Restate • State • Translate • Why • Do you think

  6. Level 1 Example • How hot is the sun? Check for Understanding • Write your own Level 1 question, share with your table. • Have one person from each table raiser his/her hand when everyone has written a level 1 question

  7. Level 2 • Level 2 questions encourage the processing of information. • Often level 2 questions compare two or more like questions

  8. Level 2 Words • Analyze • Categorize • Classify • Compare • Complete • Construct • Contrast • Distinquish • Examine • Explain why • Identify • Illustrate • Infer • Investigate • Separate • Sequence • Show • Use

  9. Level 2 Example • Compare and contrast the atmosphere and the oceans. • The question can be broken down into two level 1 questions • Describe the atmosphere • Describe the ocean

  10. Level 3 • Level 3 questions allow for new ideas to be created. • Often level 3 questions compare two or more unlike questions. • Level 3 questions can typically have multiple correct answers and are more thought provoking.

  11. Level 3 Terms • Argue • Assess • Choose • Compose • Construct • Debate • Decide • Design • Evaluate • Speculate • Rate • Plan • Predict • Prioritize • Judge • Justify • Imagine • Hypothesize

  12. Level 3 Example • Argue that the Earth is really old • The question can be broken down into two other questions • How old is the Earth (level 1) • Classify the evidence that shows the Earth is old (level 2)

  13. Check For Understanding • Write your own Level 3 question • Break that question into a level 1 and level 2 question • Share with your table. • Have one person from each table raiser his/her hand when everyone is done.

  14. Assessment • Working with your neighbor- • On your original paper that you used to write your questions about the Coke experiment- • Write a question about the experiment for each of the three Costa’s Levels of Questioning.
