  2. How did it happen? In the 1870’s, painters began painting in the Impressionist style as a reaction against the strict style of the Realists. Impressionist painters were interested in the changing qualities of light and wanted to express that in a way that Realism could not.

  3. Characteristics of Impressionist paintings: - Small, thin, yet visible brush strokes - Open composition, emphasis on the accurate - Depiction of light in its changing qualities - Ordinary subject matter - The inclusion of unusual visual angles.
