Stem Changing Verbs. Repaso. Remember when we conjugate verbs, we are going to drop the – ar , - er ,- ir ending and replace it with an ending to match the SUBJECT of the sentence. The subject of the sentence tells you who or what is performing the action of the verb. The endings are:

  2. Repaso Remember when we conjugate verbs, we are going to drop the –ar, -er,- ir ending and replace it with an ending to match the SUBJECT of the sentence. The subject of the sentence tells you who or what is performing the action of the verb. The endings are: -ar -er -ir -o -amos -o -emos -o -imos -as -ais -es -eis -es -is -a -an -e -en -e -en

  3. Types of stem changing verbs: In addition to changing the ending of the verb to match the subject of the sentence, there are a group of verbs that change in the stem also. Remember, the stem of the verb is the part of the word that is left after you remove the –ar, -er, or –ir ending. examples: hablar (to talk)  the ending is –ar; the stem is habl- Comer (to eat)  the ending is –er; the stem is com- Escribir (to write)  the ending is -ir; the stem is escrib-

Types of stem changing verbs continued: There are three types of stem changing verbs: Some verbs will change “o” to “ue” Some verbs will change “e” to “ie” Some verbs will change “e” to “i” *Stem changing verbs will change in all forms, EXCEPT the nosotros and vosotros forms. Those forms will only change their endings. *You will have to MEMORIZE the verbs that will make these changes.

  5. Verbs that change from“o” to “ue” *Notice that the verb endings are the same as regular verbs. However, it has the additional change in the stem. Dormir (to sleep)  the stem is dorm- and the ending is -ir. You will still remove the –ir ending to match the subject. You will also remove the “o” and replace it with “ue”.

  6. More verbs that change from “o” to “ue” Almorzar(to have lunch) Morir (to die) Aprobar (to approve) Mostrar (to show) Recordar (to record) *jugar (to play) this verb will change “u” to “ue”

  7. Verbs that change from“e” to “ie” Cerrar(to close)  the stem is cerr- and the ending is -ar. You will still remove the –arending to match the subject. You will also remove the “e” and replace it with “ie”.

  8. More verbs that change from “e” to “ie” Entender (to understand) Mentir (to lie) Hervir (to boil) Perder (to lose) Empezar (to begin)

  9. Verbs that change from“e” to “i” *Notice that the verb repetir has Repetir(to repeat)  the stem is repet- and the ending is -ir. You will still remove the –ir ending to match the subject. You will also remove the “e” and replace it with “i”.

  10. More verbs that change from “e” to “i” Pedir (to ask for) Competir (to compete) Servir (to serve) Medir (to measure) Conseguir (to get, obtain)
