  1. In the Name of God

  2. Classification of Stem cells • Stem cells have two main classification systems, based on: A) Differentiation capacity & reversibility B) Origin

  3. A)Stem cell classification by Differentiation capacity & reversibility 1-Totipotent stem cells: • They can produce total body and placental cells. • Example: Zygote cell 2- Pluripotent stem cells: - They can produce most or total body cells but not placental cells. - Example: Embryonic germ cells ( EGCs) , Embryonal Carcinoma cells (ECCs). 3- Multipotent stem cells: - They produce limited types of cells. - Example: Adult Stem cells (ASCs) 4- Unipotent stem cells: - They can produce only one cell type but have the property of self renewal - which distinguishes them from non stem cells.

  4. B) Human Stem cell classification by origin • Embryonic Stem Cells (ESCs) • Fetal Stem Cells (FSCs) • Infant Stem Cells (ISCs) • Adult Stem Cells (ASCs)

  5. Classification of Human Stem cells

  6. Blastocyst (5-7)- Embryonic stem cell Gonadal ridge (6 weeks )- Embryonic germ cells Primordial germ cells Germ cells (association with somatic cells of the gonad ) (HEGCs) which are also stem cells, originate from the primodial germ cells of the gonadal ridge of 5-9- week old fetuses Pluripotent stem cells Produce cells of all three germ layers Embryonic Stem Cells(ESCs)

  7. Embryonic Stem Cells(ESCs) • In first the production of human ESCs was made in 1998 year by tamson • Embryonic stem cells, as their name suggests, are derived from embryos. Specifically, embryonic stem cells are derived from embryos that develop from eggs that have been fertilized in vitro fertilization clinic — and then donated for research purposes with informed consent of the donors. • They are not derived from eggs fertilized in a woman's body. The embryos from which human embryonic stem cells are derived are typically four or five days old and are a hollow microscopic ball of cells called the blastocyst. • The blastocyst includes three structures: the trophoblast, which is the layer of cells that surrounds the blastocyst, the blastocoel, which is the hollow cavity inside the blastocyst; and the inner cell mass, which is a group of approximately 30 cells at one end of the blastocoel.
