  4. Different pathways The Priory School Apprenticeships (Levels 1 – 7) higher and degree apprenticeships Academic pathway (A-Levels) Vocational pathway (Applied and Tech Levels)

  5. The Academic pathway at 16 • Lots of young people choose to do A-Levels post-16. These 2 years courses are usually assessed by exams but some do include coursework. A-Levels offer a great route into university, Higher or Degree apprenticeships and employment. There are also routes to higher education from vocational qualifications. • Local providers include: • Shrewsbury Colleges Group • Shrewsbury School • Thomas Adams School, Wem • Shrewsbury Girls High School • Thomas Telford School • Condover College • Ellesmere College • Adams Grammar School

  6. The vocational pathway at 16 • By applying learning to real-life situations, these qualifications offer a more practical approach than traditional A-Level academic courses whilst still enabling progression to higher education courses at university or at college, to an Apprenticeship or into full-time employment. • Vocational subjects - related to a broad employment area such as business, engineering, IT, health and social care. Previously called BTECs and OCR Cambridge Nationals, if they are at Level 3 these are now called Applied Vocational Qualifications. • Vocational courses - that lead to specific jobs such as hairdressing, accounting, professional cookery or plumbing. These courses are called Technical Level Qualifications (Tech Levels). • Apprenticeships - offer training for a job while working for an employer, alongside study for an associated qualification. You get paid as you learn.

  7. apprenticeships • There are over 1500 different types of apprenticeships - from Jewellery Making to Law. • Every type of apprenticeship is graded at a certain level and this affects the entry requirements. • Most apprenticeships have pathways to progress from a Level 1 all the way up to a Higher or Degree apprenticeship - but it depends on the job.

  8. Higher and degree apprenticeships • Higher Apprenticeships may be general such as in 'management' or in a very specific area. For example cyber security, Police Constable and Nurse Associate. • Degree apprenticeships were introduced in 2015, and are part of what is known as Higher Apprenticeships - which includes all apprenticeships between level 4 and level 7. These enable you to gain a higher qualification such as a foundation degree, Bachelor’s degree or a Master’s degree whilst you are working. • Higher and degree apprenticeships have increased in popularity. In one year, from 2017 to 2018, the number of higher and degree apprentices doubled to 6000, and this is expected to grow each year.

  9. Post 18 routes • University – Huge range of different universities to choose from, however if students are thinking of attending one of The Russell Group’s 24 members, entry requirements can be quite specific and therefore it is advisable to undertake some research of these prior to post 16 choices. • Apprenticeship – Higher and degree level • Employment – various employment fairs locally, for example the Job’s Fair held annually beginning of October in Telford
