  2. Content of Presentation • Finalisation of qualification policy • Distribution of language and other subject statements • Development of subject assessment guidelines • Teacher training in 2005 • LTSM • Communication strategy

Finalisation of Qualification Policy • Technical / legal team established to finalise the policy • Draft presented to IPEC on 19 April and HESA on 28 April for comment • Final draft was taken to Minister on 2 May and then to HEDCOM on 9 May • Published for comment on 24 May • Comments to be submitted by 17 June

  4. Requirements of FETC • Two South African languages • Mathematics or Mathematics Literacy • Life Orientation • Any three approved subjects • 7 point scale

Distribution of language subject statements • Majority of printing completed • Volume of language documents suggests need for a change in plan for distribution • Plan to distribute directly to schools schools is awaited • All schools will have language statements by end May before training starts

  6. Progress on subject assessment guideline documents • Brief for subject writing teams has been developed • IPEC (province and unions) have submitted names for subject writing teams • Documents will be completed by 7 July • Edited and printed by 26 August and distributed to schools by end September

  7. Teacher training in 2005 • All provinces will conduct minimum 5 day training with focus on subject knowledge and learning programme design • DOE has provided template for 5 day training • DOE edited Learning Programme Guidelines and distributed these to provinces on 3 May • Provinces to determine composition of PCTT

  8. Communication strategy • Message to coincide with finalisation of policy • Main messages: • all learners to choose subjects by end of August • all teachers to attend 5 day training in 2005 • all learners to receive at least five textbooks • assessment requirements will reduce administrative demand but increase cognitive and skills demand

  9. LTSM • All provinces report readiness • Language screening process will be completed by 30 May and national list developed • Literature books to be determined provincially • Catalogues to be distributed to schools after 31 May

  10. Vision of FET • Vision Team established • Data on current offering of scarce subjects gathered by Department of Education • ICT and MSTE Working Groups will assist in the development of the vision
