  2. What you write • HL • Three essays • One in paper 1 (choice of biological, cognitive or sociocultural levels of analysis) • Two in paper 2 – one in each option • Developmental psychology essay • Abnormal psychology essay

Format of the essay • Introduction • Introduces essay question and line of argument • Short and focused • Main Body • Five or six shorter paragraphs • Development of essay • Directs you to relevant psychological knowledge in the context of the command term • Must present a clear argument supported by relevant knowledge • Conclusion • Must relate directly to essay question and follow logically from main body argument

Three things tested • Knowledge and comprehension of psychology • Knowledge of psychological theories, empirical studies, key concepts and that you can use it appropriately • Critical thinking skills • That you can apply and evaluate the knowledge appropriately and use it in the analysis of psychological phenomena • Organizational skills • That you can focus on the question and structure the essay • Must appear coherent, logical and build and argument

Four rules for writing these essays • FOCUS • On the question/the command term • STRUCTURE • Clear development from start to end • ARGUE • Back up your claims with relevant psychological knowledge (studies) • USE CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS • Evaluate theories and studies • Take a critical look at methodology

A step-by-step guide to writing a good essay • Read the essay question carefully • Choose the relevant knowledge • Consider your argument • Logical flow/connect sentences and pgs to one another • Avoid personal opinions • Consider critical thinking skills • Analysis, synthesis and evaluation • Plan – make an outline with a clear structure • Write – stick to your plan/ use third person • Check the essay for flaws • Make sure it addresses the question, command term and argument is clear
