  1. Climate Connections Presented by the DCMS Storming Panthers

  2. Climate Vs. Weather • The main difference between climate and weather is climate is long term, and weather is short term. “Climate is the average of daily weather over a period of years.” ~Jeff Lyons Chief Meteorologist of Channel 14 News • Examples of weather: thunderstorms, blizzards • Examples of climate: annual temperatures, seasonal weather, and tornadoes

  3. The Problem • Tornado Alley • We are on the edge of Tornado Alley. Being western Kentucky, we have a higher average number of tornadoes in our area than mostly anywhere in the world. • Average: 2-3 tornadoes a year • Most tornadoes occur during April and June

  4. The Problem (Cont.) • “In a typical year, we'll have around 1,200 tornadoes in the United States.  Most of these will occur in "Tornado Alley"...the central and southern plains through the Ohio River valley.”-Jeff Lyons

  5. Tornado of 2000 • One of the disasters caused by a tornado was January 3, in 2000.This tornado was a F3. There was 70 million dollars worth of damage done and 22 people injured. This tornado is one remembered by most of the people in Owensboro. “Tornadoes have affected Owensboro a couple of times in the last few years.  The biggest was the F3 that plowed right through town on January 3, 2000.  This is the twister that tore up Kentucky Wesleyan, Wesleyan Park Plaza and some other places along Frederica St.” –Jeff Lyons

  6. The Solution • Solution: Tornado Shelters • A small shelter made of fiberglass, stainless steel hardware that is partially in the ground that is used in emergencies to protect from tornadoes.

  7. $$$$$ Prices $$$$$ • A 18 person tornado shelter costs: $8,375.00 • A 10 person: $5,485.00 • A 6 person : $4,275.00 • A 4 person: $3,675.00 These particular tornado shelters are manufactured by Midwest Estate Treasures Prices thanks to:

  8. Similar Climate • Another country that has a climate similar to ours is: • Bulgaria • Bulgaria has an estimated 2 minimum and 2 maximum tornadoes per year similar to Owensboro, Kentucky

  9. Resources • www.tornadochaser.net • http://shop.ebay.com • http://www.essl.org • Our science teacher, Mrs. Rogier • 14 WFIE Jeff Lyons
