  1. CS551 Group Project Yugi Lee STB #555 (816) 235-5932 yugi@cstp.umkc.edu www.cstp.umkc.edu/~yugi CS551 - project 1

  2. Group Project: DALS (Distributed Adaptive Learning System) • to produce web-based learning environments that dynamically adapt the subject matter (knowledge) to the learner. • Achieving this goal will allow any desired knowledge field to be made accessible to any learner or learner community, asynchronously and optimized, at any place on the network. CS551 - project 1

  3. Group Project: DALS (Distributed Adaptive Learning System) CS551 - project 1

  4. DALS: Learner Space • Learner Space: the collection of Learner Filters which are profiles of characteristics that describe a Learner’s capacity to learn, • determine what data should be part of a Learner Filter, • show how to acquire, organize and update that data, and • identify what kinds of analyses are required to dynamically optimize the learning episode using the Learner Filter data. CS551 - project 1

  5. DALS: Learner Space • The Learner Space deals with variables that impact learning such as • past learning, • thinking style, • intelligence, achievement • aptitude, motivation • personality, • emotional state, satisfaction CS551 - project 1

  6. DALS: Knowledge Space • Knowledge Views have the capacity to assemble different views of knowledge in response to a Learner Filter. • The Knowledge Space addresses the collection, certification, organization, interrelationships, access, quality, evaluation, replacement, replication, migration and display/representation of knowledge, information and data. • Knowledge type: declarative, procedural and structural knowledge. • Knowledge views: Guided Learning, Discovery Learning, Game Learning CS551 - project 1

  7. DALS: Agency Space • Agency creates a transitory, network-resident learning environment that is optimized for each learning episode. • A Learning Episode is a specific instance of a Learner interacting with the DALS to acquire Knowledge. • Knowledge agent • learner agent • Decision maker agent CS551 - project 1

  8. DALS Architecture CS551 - project 1

  9. DALS: Processes • accepts a request for a learning episode from a Learner, • analyzes the data in the Learner Filter supplied with the request, • accesses the appropriate knowledge in the Knowledge Space, • creates a presentation environment for the Learner that is ‘optimized’ with respect to the Learner's Filter and the Knowledge Views, • presents and monitors the learning episode, • updates the Knowledge Space and the Learner Filter • closes the learning episode. CS551 - project 1

  10. DALS: Components • Learner Component • Group 1: learner model (learner assessment, monitoring, profile, filtering, etc) • Knowledge Components • Group 2: knowledge network • Group 3: game • Group 4: e-book (audio, text, transparency coordination) • Group 5: discovery environment (chatting room, campers, graphical tool, etc) CS551 - project 1

  11. DALS: Project Schedule • Feb 12: Project 1 (7%): Problem Statement and Technical Reviews • March 5: Project 2 (7%): Domain analysis & Specification of requirements • March 19: Project 3 (7%): Overall design • April 25: Project 4 (7%): System implementation and Documentation • May 2: Demonstration/Presentation (5%) • May 6: Final Research Paper (12%) CS551 - project 1
