Health: Youth Substance Abuse • Estimated 15,000 Harford County residents with active substance abuse problem • Approximately 2,000 residents receive treatment annually for substance abuse problems • Approximately 13,000 residents need substance abuse treatment • 74% of all the deaths of Harford County residents over the past 3 years related to Drugs and Alcohol involved prescription drugs • Prescription Take-Back Days in September and November collected 1,900 pounds of old and unused medicines Sources: Harford County Office of Drug Control Policy, State of Maryland Medical Examiner’s Office

Health: Mental Health Consumers Youth birth to 17 served by the mental health system in 2009 • 1,882 children were served by the public mental health system in Harford County. • 135 new child & adolescents clients served • Children & adolescents made up 45% of all consumers • Among Harford County’s youth: • 81% required outpatient services • 11% psychiatric rehabilitation programs • 5% inpatient services • 1% residential treatments • 1% hospitalization Source: Harford County Office on Mental Health Core Service Agency, 2009
